There is a post on ML about maternity leave and it had me wondering how much time you girls will get off. I own my business and I think I will have to start going back at 4 weeks, but I am really hoping I can push it to 6. I think it will be really hard to go back so early. I also don't get paid when I'm not there which sucks big time.

Under the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) most employees can get 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave. I'm trying to save up enough sick leave and annual leave to cover that time. In the federal government, you can use 6 weeks of sick leave to cover vaginal birth, 8 weeks for C-section, and use annual to make up the rest. Of course, you're employer is welcome to let you negotiate more time off, or pay for maternity leave, but those extras are not backed by a federal statute.

I have STD provided at my work which is 60% of pay for a certain number of weeks depending on vaginal or c-section birth. I believe the max is 10 weeks. Other than that I just rely on any sick leave or annual through the rest of the FMLA 12 week max.

I also own my own business, so no maternity leave for me. I can take as much time as I'd like, but I make about 3-4x what my husband does, so my income is needed. I'll probably just take 4 weeks off.

I work for a State University, so we get paid for 6 weeks of "maternity leave", and since I am managment I don't pay into SDI so thats all I qualify for other then my sick/vacation time. I plan on taking between 7 and 8 weeks off based on my 6 weeks plus sick. I don't want to use up all of my vacation time since I will need to be taking time off for well-baby check ups and similar items.
I'm not sure what I will get, but I'm guessing that it'll be unpaid. I have short term disability though, so I ought to look into it. I also don't really want to ask the HR lady until I'm knocked up because I really don't want all the nosey ladies in the lunchroom asking me if I'm pregnant all the time (the HR lady is like the queen of the lunchroom ladies!). It really depends on when it happens for me, since I work on a school schedule. If it lined up with summer vacation, that would be ideal!
I get FMLA, so 12 weeks. My STD will pay out 80% for the first 6, and then 65% for the next 6.
I am really concerned about taking 12 weeks off though. I know everybody says it won't matter to me when the time comes, but I cannot imagine being off work for twelve weeks. It just seems so long, and like so much can happen, and I'm a control freak about my job. The idea of being out this long stresses me out.
I'll have 6 weeks of disability and 6 weeks of baby bonding time, both paid at 55%. I should have another 8 weeks or so of maternity leave allowed, unpaid. I have enough sick/vacation time saved to cover the first 12 weeks at 45% and the last 8 weeks at 100%. In total, I should have 20 weeks off, fully paid.
I'll have 6 weeks of STD which pays at 60% and starts on day 11, I think. I also have PTO and EIB I can use. I'll probably end up taking 8 weeks, although I would love to take the full 12 weeks guaranteed by FMLA. depends on our money situation at the time though.

you'll want to get it set up now. a lot of STD plans don't take effect if you deliver within 9 months. mine is set up that way, so is my sister's. my sister was TTC, and set up her STD, but it turned out she conceived like 2 weeks before setting up STD, so she couldn't use it.

I'm in Europe and get the minimum legally required amount** - a minimum of 16 weeks fully paid (of which a minimum of 10 weeks need to be after the baby's birth and a minimum of 4 weeks before due date. If you go on leave 6 weeks before due and deliver past due, you'll get the extra time until your baby is 10 weeks old.
After that you have a legal right to take up a max of either 3 or 6 months unpaid, which can be spread out over a max of 8 years, so you can go part time for a while with a right to go back to full time.
Some companies do pay some salary through that extra leave - mine covers a max of 50 percent of the time you take out, at a max of 100 percent, but that's really just for the lowest of salaries. I'd get 50 percent of the time I take, paid at 50 percent of my hourly wage. If you voluntarily leave the company within the same number of months as you used in extra leave, you have to pay it back .
With all the vacation time I still have left from last year, if I'd get pregnant this cycle (fat chance) I'd be able to take about 22 -24 weeks of fully paid leave and then I'd work 1 day a week less for the next few years (and getting paid 25% for that day still). I'm guessing I wouldn't stay away 22 weeks though, but rather take the 16 weeks and take a kick ass babymoon when I can still move, and have the days for a nice vacation to introduce LO to our family in the Us/Italy.
**A lot of other European countries get a lot more - a number actually get a full year at 100 percent paid. I want that!

Thanks! I know that I have STD already (not to be confused with an STD, ha ha!). I'll pull out the paperwork tonight to try and see what it covers though.
Now I'm starting to worry about taking time off work (cart before horse!). I think I'd like to take as much time as possible off, but I just don't know how much time my work is going to let me go. I would love to take a whole year and I think we could afford it, financially, but I doubt that my work would be keen on having me gone for that long.
I think I can take 18 - 20 weeks off. I believe I get state disability for the first 6-8 weeks which is 2/3 my salary then I get family leave unpaid. I will get paid for any time off I have left too but it won't be in addition to family leave and disability. I def want to take it all off but worried bc the attorney I work for would need some one to replace me while I'm out on mat. leave.

I will probably adjust my schedule so that I work part time at home after the kiddo is a couple months old.
For those of you that plan on using sick/vacation time, what if the kid or you gets sick? Would you have to use unpaid time off? I'd worry about not having any cushion if I needed it.

Yeah, I've thought about exhausting sick leave and annual leave. I might end up taking some unpaid time during maternity leave. My boss has 2 kids and she's always saying she never has leave b/c they're always sick.
I will take a full year leave. (In Canada) We get up to a year leave at up to 60%. (Its up to 60% because the max they will pay out is $900, or $1000 I can't remember, every 2 weeks.) This is a government thing, so if you never return to work you still get it and don't have to pay any of it back.
Some employers pay the additional 40% to top you up to 100% but as a casual (who works WAY more then full time hours I'm not entitled to this. But at least I get some money for taking the time off.
