Charleston! Beaches plus plantations, a great downtown, history, churches etc. Much different from Myrtle Beach. There are a couple of funpark type places and a waterslide but those are probably a 20 minute drive.

Thanks! I am looking at Charleston now. Where would be a good place/area to stay that is in Charleston, but not too awfully far from the beach?
I visited the Outer Banks last summer for the first time, and I thought the beaches were beautiful. We stayed in Duck, which is on the quieter end. According to google, it's about 7-8 hours from you, so a little longer than you were thinking.
We really enjoyed Savannah and Charleston as destinations, though we didn't actually go to the beach in either city, I've heard nice things about Hilton Head.
I'm not crazy about Virginia Beach (I live in central Virginia so that is my closest beach) but many people do love it.

Savannah/Tybee Island would be great for your family. There are plenty of child friendly activities. I'd recommend staying on the northern end of the island. It is a bit more quiet. I also recommend renting bikes and a bike trailer for your daughter while there. It is a very bike friendly town with paths all over the island.
