I know they are seemingly unrelated, but the impetus is I need a heart rate monitor and I want one that will guide me towards heart rate zones. I run with my iPhone, it doesn't bother me (I will run with it regardless) so the Garmin GPS features would be nice to save data or when my iPhone runs out - all the time on halves - but the Pear seems to offer more heart rate coaching with less effort from me. And frankly, the 610 - though not the monstrosity earlier Garmins were - still seems really complicated.
The thing I like about the Pear is that it actually tells you, over the iPhone, when to increase and decrease pace. That's pretty awesome IMO. I liked the 610 because it does have exertion zones, but it doesn't tell you when to return to your cine. I think.

you should be able to set up the 610 to alert you when your HR is too high or too low. you'll have to enter the info manually, but you can them up to alert you on HR the same way you can set it up to alert you on pace.
