Moved here about 2 years ago. Shortly got involved in the book club and found a group of women w/ kids my DS's age and who liked to get together and have a drink while hanging out. So- I started having "Happy Hour Playdates".
During today's NFC game, DH was texting w/ all the DH's. Invited them over for "happy hour" on our front lawn at halftime. A few guys showed up, then we set one for the next game. We had beers available, and for the 2nd game - shots too. They came, they drank, then they went home.
I think a new tradition has been born!
We all have young kids and it's hard to all get together for football games (naps, bedtime, etc). So this kind of gives us the social component, but everyone can also hang out at home most of the night.
My aunt & uncle have a huge dinner bell on their backdeck. When the neighbors decide it's time to get together they show up on the deck & ring the bell. Everyone comes bearing their own drink.
For halloween the tradition is that dad's take the kids door-to-door. The dad's take their own glass along and get a drink as their treat at the houses (I'm thinking they don't get a drink or beer at EVERY house) but it's really funny, friendly neighborhood.
You never REALLY know what you're moving into and we got really lucky. This is exactly the kind of neighborhood I wanted, and we got lucky enough to get it.
