I am so excited to tag along with DH on a work trip next week. We will be in San Diego for 4 days. I need restaurant recs for dinner and anything fun I can do by myself during the day when he's at the conference. Anyone?
Cafe Chloe is great for brunch too! Our favorite dinner place is Wine Vault Bistro. Amazing food and wine. For a quicker, easy breakfast downtown there is Richard Walkers Pancake House. During the day you can do some shopping at the boutique stores in the Gaslamp Distict, or at the Horton Plaza mall. Take a ferry to Coronado and do some more shopping, eating. Visit the Hotel Del for sightseeing. Take a harbor cruise. Visit the Midway Museum. Really cool! If you like museums take a cab to Balboa Park and visit some of the museums and have lunch at The Prado (the bar area is casual, cheaper and just as good food).
I loved the zoo. If you have a free day it is definitely worth visiting.
I can't remember the names of any of the places I ate, other than the pancake house someone else mentioned which was quite good. There was a Mexican place in that general area that was very good too but I can't think of what it was called!
Things to do: museums at Balboa Park, the Zoo, Sea World, hiking Torrey Pines, beach and seal watching at La Jolla Shores, shopping in La Jolla, rent a bike or beach at Coronado Island, Mission Beach boardwalk, hiking at Mission Trails.

What part of town will you be in? Will you have access to a rental car or will you be relying on public transportation?
You can easily spend all 4 days at Balboa Park. Aside from the zoo there are a ton of museums that you can explore.
My favorite Mexican joint is a little hole in the wall place in Barrio Logan. Las Quatro Milpas in Barrio Logan is only open for breakfast and lunch and they are closed on Sundays. Its cash only and you can easily spend an hour waiting in line to get food. Its home cooked mexican comfort food.
Stone Brewery and World Bistro in Escondido has a great selection of beer and a farm to table inspired menu.
For MM Italian, I love Fillippi's in Little Italy. If you are staying downtown with no car, you can take a cab to Old Town, which is the historic district and has great Mexican restaurants. The food is good at Old Town Mexican, but the the fresh tortillas you can watch them make through the window are amazing, and there are several other fantastic restaurants there. Go to the Gaslamp downtown and Pacific Beach if you are looking for bars/clubs. I second PPs for Balboa Park and Horton Plaza. If you have a car, I recommend going to La Jolla Cove and driving up the 101 to check out some of the other beaches. If you love to shop, Fashion Valley, Horton Plaza, Seaport Village (kitschy little shops) or one of the outlet malls.
Thanks everyone! I honestly have no idea where we are staying. This is all very last minute. We haven't been away together without kids since 2009. (ugh!) I don't think I'll know what to do with myself without 4 kids buzzing around me, but I can't wait to find out!
I am looking forward to dinners out and trying the recs you gave. I don't know if I will have the car or if DH needs it for the conference. I would love to hit a beach and shop. Or sleep, or read a book, or go to the pool, really just about anything sounds good to me.

Just a word of advice if you plan on hitting the beach....even if its sunny and "warm" outside the water is FREEZING!
