Currently 19°, feels like 6°. I've lived in PA my whole life and feel like I'm LESS tolerant of the cold every year. I do think I'd actually die if I lived any further North, lol.
I don't think I've ever seen schools close for cold weather, not even at -40C. maybe they do now and I'm not aware because my kids are not in school yet?
All places have their pros and cons. Yup, I am a yooper, I live as far north in the UP as you can get. Do you ever travel north and over the bridge? Schools were closed today thanks to the temps and the 12+ inches of snow we received in the last 24 hours or so.
I actually do have to use a vacation day today (we don't get "cold days") and I did take it because it's pretty hard to leave a 9 year old home alone. I am just really glad I didn't have to go out there and shovel my drive and scrape my windshield. DH couldn't stay home, so I took one for the team!
We haven't been to the UP in a few years but we love the Traverse City area. One of our daughters lives with two of our grandchildren, so we try and pop up there as often as we can.
Be careful in all the snow and cold. The road I live on doesn't get plowed or salted, so it's a sheet of ice right now. I'm about 8 blocks off the main street and I can't drive more than 5 mph or I'll end up sliding right off the road. I had to drive my husband's truck yesterday and I was still sliding around in 4WD.
I'm always glad to welcome another MI girl to Married Life.
Traverse City is a great area! Thanks for the words of caution and the welcome! It was slippery last night and I was thankful to finally get home AND for 4 wheel drive.
Papie-I don't ever remember having the day off for cold temps when we were little. They seem to call school off a lot for reasons I don't every remember us getting the days off for. But when I say that out loud, someone usually asks if I walked to school up hill...both ways, too?
When I was a junior in high school the governor shut down all public schools for the day due to extreme cold (I just looked it up online - it was -30 with a windchill of -48). My friends and I went to the Science Museum, got stoned and saw a movie at the omnitheater. Good times.
Currently 20° with a wind chill of 5°. It was 15° when I took the girls to school this morning which is the coldest it's been all winter. We got a dusting of snow last night too.
I do not want to live anywhere that regularly sees negative temps in the winter. The teens are cold enough for me, tyvm!
Our school district will do delayed starts in very cold weather. The buses run on diesel which will gel up at some temperature which I don't recall. So, they have to plug the buses in and warm them up before they can run the routes. It is 4F here, feels like -6. No school delays here (southeast Iowa), so the buses must have still been able to run okay today. Forecast says we're supposed to get to 20, but I don't know if it will make it or not.
-30, -40 with the windchill it's business as usual here because this happens every year.
Exactly. Not yet this year, but it will happen. The coldest days are usually in february. I can't imagine they would close everything because of the cold.
