I'm not a fan, but someone sends my department one every year. I think it comes from this place: www.haydelbakery.com/site.php. But I don't know if it's good King Cake, since I don't like it anyway.
Edit: It actually just literally showed up. What a coincidence. It's from Randazzo's.
I've never had it, and never really heard of it until the message boards. What does it taste like?
I really depends since different places make them differently and also make a lot of different types of fillings. I'm not that big of a fan of plain king cakes because, well just that, they're too plain for my taste. I like cream cheese filled, or strawberry filled, etc...
It doesn't really have a traditional cake-like consistency...more like a cinnamon roll or danish type of consistency, IMO.
I think it tastes like a gooey cinnamon roll... maybe like a better quality Cinnabon. I have never liked Cinnabon, so my opinion here really is worthless.
OK, really weird timing. The King Cake just showed up in our office, and it's from Randazzo's. And my coworker nearly sawed the baby in half, LOL.
They forgot to put a baby in my king cake.
Or maybe I ate it? I don't know. I keep wondering if that's even possible. I keep thinking I'm going to have some major intestinal issues and then I'll go to the ER and discover a plastic baby lodged in there.

Ha! That's kind of unnerving, and reminds me of the time I could have sworn I used three bay leaves in a big pot of soup, but we only ever found two. Neither H nor I died, so obviously eating a bay leaf isn't the end of the world.

It's like a zillion times better than Cinnabon in my opinion, Cinnabon just tastes so full of chemicals. King cake is delicious. Although not hot...but you could prob heat it up and make it even better.

This made me lol at my desk!
Is it possible that they just had the baby somewhere in the packaging and you didn't notice? Some places don't put the baby inside the cake anymore b/c it's a hazard I guess...they just put it in the box and let you put it in there or do whatever.

In the US it's illegal to put something inedible inside something edible, which is why those kinder eggs from Europe are illegal. I'm assuming this is the case with King Cake's too.
The galettes in France are different than the ones in the US. I prefer the French ones and they aren't all that difficult to make.

Whole Foods king cake is not bad... It's obviously not as good as the authentic NOLA king cake, but we had some last year and it was passable, at least with people not from NOLA!
Yeah, I'm seeing like $50 for most of these. It's half that in the bakeries. Don't get me wrong it's totally worth it and if I didn't have people to mail it to me I would just do that. Luckily my parents don't mind sending me care packages

Wait really? My king cake almost always has the baby already baked inside, with a giant warning right on the wrapping that says "plastic baby inside the cake." or something equally alarmist.

Shipping for perishable food items always tends to cost a lot in my experience.
The babies are always in the box, but not in the cake. Often, someone will "bury" it before serving to maintain the "you have to buy the next king cake" tradition.

Oh I'm aware. My dad learned that the hard way just last month when sending us some Patton's hot sausage.
Like I said, it's totally worth it no matter what.
