H's grandpa spent about 10 years in jail for tax evasion a long time ago.
His brother went to juvie when he was in junior high for breaking into a house with a friend that was being built and smashing a bunch of holes in the drywall or something like that. Their dad was none too pleased.
I have a cousin that was in prison for 11 years for:
BURGLARY ASSAULT ANY PERSON
KIDNAP;COMM.OR FAC.FELONY
ROBB. GUN/DEADLY WPN
KIDNAP;COMM.OR FAC.FELONY
BURG/DWELL/OCCUP.CONVEY
GRAND THEFT,300 L/5,000

GRAND THEFT,300 L/5,000
BURGUNOCCSTRUC/CV OR ATT.
GRAND THEFT,300 L/5,000
BURGUNOCCSTRUC/CV OR ATT.
He was 18 when he went in - he was released in 2007. No parole. I was 11 when he went in & I don't remember much about him. I've talked with him several times since he was released, he seems okay - but I didn't know him before so I have nothing to compare him to.
ETA: i looked up the charges on the corrections website - No one ever told me what he really went for, I looked him up a few times while he was in prison because I was very curious about him.
I know nothing about DH's family - as far as I know, no one has been arrested. I have a few other cousins who've been arrested for DUI, and other random things.. No one ever did any time in prison besides the above mentioned cousin.
Step SIL has been in and out of prison (not jail, PRISON) for years. Mostly drug related, but she once was convicted for fraud. She was pretending to be pregnant and defrauding three couples at once who each thought they were adopting her unborn child. She wasn't pregnant at the time.
My best friend from HS has a best childhood friend who is currently serving 50 years for felonious murder of a child. She was a child care provider and a child died in her care. But there are weird things in the story: timeline doesn't make sense, first two autopsies point to injury happening hours earlier (provider called EMS 5m after child dropped off), forensic examiner convicted of making up evidence, etc. I don't think she actually did it. But she's been in prison for over a decade.
The most interesting case is my uncle (a former attorney) and his wife who are both currently serving time in federal prison for a laundry list of white collar crimes stemming from them running what was essentially an investment scheme for over 15 years. According to the reports I've seen, they bilked their "investors" out of somewhere between $5-7 million. There are several other fairly wild details, but I don't want to give too much identifying info. He was my favorite uncle growing up; I basically idolized him. His son is like another brother to me. It was a hard pill to swallow when I found out all the crap he was involved in.
I have a cousin who has served time for manufacturing and distributing drugs. Another cousin served time for armed robbery. Another uncle got probation for serious tax evasion to the tune of close to $1 million over 5 years. I think there may be a couple of others. So, yeah, my family's got its share of criminals.

My uncle moved to another country to avoid being arrested for tax evasion. I will very likely never see him again. The minute he would step back into the US, they'd have his ass.
FIL is (very low level guy caught in a govt corruption scandal). And one of his uncles just got out of prison for murder, but supposedly he's innocent.

My aunt by marraige's son wento prison for child abuse.
I've had a few cousins in and out of jail on drug charges. H has a cousin who did as well, I think.
My great grandma once did an overnighter in the drunk tank when she was in her 80's. The story goes that she and my great-grandpa had a long-term thing together even after they got divorced. Great-grandpa married his second wife a few years before I was born- and he called off their long-term fling. Great-grandma got pissed off, apparently went to the bar (which was not the norm for her) and got a little too drunk to be walking home. All I take from that story is that I wish I remembered her, because she seems pretty awesome.
I have an uncle who has been convicted of felony DWI. Possibly more than once. He doesn't currently have a license, probably never will again, and doesn't drive. He's an alcoholic in rapidly declining condition - alcohol related dementia, etc. It's sad.

A close relative who was an airline exec was indicted for accepting vendor kickbacks. He and the other young guy among a group of several execs took the fall when they pleaded guilty, as agreed, and everyone else claimed innocent. He was later pardoned. It's a fascinating story, but my family NEVER talks about it. He called the time in jail his time at "boys' camp."
What's the worst in your and/or your DH family, if you care to share and compare?
As far as I know DH's family is squeaky clean. My only one, that I'm aware of, is a brother than went AWOL from the army several years ago - I think that's a felony?
My cousin is serving what will likely be a life sentence for stabbing his gf and her lover - she made it, he did not.

Sadly I have several. Mostly for drug related offenses. My brother was arrested for dealing drugs, but he took a plea and diversion so he wouldn't have felony charges.
My uncle got seven years when he picked up two female hitchhikers, he didn't know they had robbed a bank. He was named an accomplice in the crime but he still maintains his innocence. He was a truck driver at the time, so picking up hitchhikers wasn't too unheard of, especially back in the 70's.
I've had plenty of family spend a year or less in jail, but none in prison.

My brother has served some time for drugs/dealing. He participated in drug court to reduce his sentence, but he had a weapons charge as well. I have a cousin in prison on assault 1 for shooting someone.

If that woman truly did not commit the crime she's in jail for then she or her loved ones should look at www.centurionministries.org/... they do so many great things in helping innocent people.

I remember you saying this before and it scares the crap out of me...innocent ppl convicted of something---this happening to me is one of my worst nightmares. I had a friend falsely accused of child abuse and arrested as a child care provider. There was videotape evidence that she did nothing wrong. The charges were dropped but it was a total mess. She's the sweetest person and would never, ever do anything like that. Not one person thought she was guilty---false accusations ruin lives.
