OK, I have a great uncle (My grandfather's brother) who has children. Who are they to me, my second cousins? Who are their children to me? Third cousins?
Anyway, I FB friended one of my third cousins? today and she is so unbelievably gorgeous. I am totally jealous of her. She's in Chicago interviewing for medical school. I wish I could be her.
you need the consanguinity chart! i believe your grandfather's brother is your great uncle, and your grandfather's brother's children are your first cousins once removed.
i wish i could be lots of people too. currently, my husband's prom date. she's tall, thin, gorgeous, lives in switzerland with her impossibly good looking husband, and has 2 apparently well-behaved children who go to nice restaurants and ski. they're also gorgeous. it's like a nutella ad or something.
it's just the terminology. it's to distinguish them from your first cousins (children of your aunts and uncles). since they're the children of your great aunts and uncles they're your first cousins "once removed," i.e., removed one further generation.
this is, i swear to you, the only thing my trusts and estates litigation class was good for. that and the dishy stories in the cases.
Also even if they are cousins, if there is a big age difference between two relatives, the younger one calls the older one Tia/Tio. (Aunt/Uncle)
Example: My cousin Mary is 2 years older than me. My daughter calls her Tia Mary because I don't think it's appropriate for children to call adults by their given names.
