I rented a car from Avis- I get a corporate discount. For 8 days it's around $260.00. Great!
Chase was having a discount on Avis giftcards (20% off-yay!) I have a ton of points. I get $250 worth, with points.
Problem-In order to get insurance coverage on my CC (for free) I need to charge the "full" amount to the card.
To get insurance through Avis is its $27.99/day. More than my rental costs to start with.
There is no way out of this, right? I either pay with GC + CC and pay $260, or pay just with the CC and pay $260? I already contacted my normal car insurance, they cover liability only on rental cars.
I think that I'd just go with the GC and the liability coverage. I don't think that you should spend a lot of time worrying about this. Are you taking the car off-road?
Nothing is ever simple is it? Can you sell the gift cards and just use your CC so you are covered insurance wise? Normally, I would say I'd be okay with using the GC and liability only, but we just had our vehicle broken in to a couple of weeks ago.
I was looking into selling them. They are gift certificates so the normal gift card places won't take them. I will probably just end up charging the whole thing and either sell them on ebay? or use them on a shorter weekend trip. I think I would be too nervous not to have the collision/comprehensive.
Do you have full coverage on your personal auto? I'm extremely surprised your car insurance wouldn't cover you. If they won't check with your credit card company. I never purchase supplemental coverage via the rental car company for US travel.
Can't you use your cc to secure the purchase, but then when you pay at the end of the trip use the gc? That way if something does go wrong it will be covered by your cc, and if it doesn't then you don't need to worry.
I have Liberty Mutual, we do have full coverage but our agent says they only cover liability on rental cars.
Ijack-good question. I'm not sure, do you pay before or after your car rental normally? I clearly haven't done this very often.. Hey, worth a try either way!
Do you only have liability on your auto policy? Generally your full coverage should extend to a rental car
Our insurance has always been the same as the OP's. Our personal insurance covers liability and the credit card covers collision and theft.
This is a good idea. I believe car rentals charge when you drop the car off. Last time I rented a car, I gave them my credit card when I picked up the car. When I returned it, my mom said she would pay for it so we gave them her card instead...no problem.

I would call your agent back and ask if they are 100% on their answer. If they say yes, ask them to show you where in your policy this is stated.

What state do you reside in?
Washington State
Call your agent tomorrow and ask again...I'm certain you were given incorrect information. if they are adamant that there's no coverage ask where in your policy it is, I think that question will clear things up

So my auto policy says we have coverage for comprehensive/collision for: "non-owned auto" or "your auto". Definition is of a "non-owner auto" is below, I cannot figure out what that first definition mean... but it clearly doesn't fall within the 2nd.
C. "Non-owned auto" means: 1. Any private passenger auto, pickup, van or "trailer" not owned by or furnished or available for the regular use of you or any "family member" while in the custody of or being operated by you or any "family member;" or
2. Any auto or "trailer" you do not own while used as a temporary substitute for "your covered auto" which is out of normal use because of its: a. breakdown; d. loss; or b. repair; e. destruction. c. servicing;
