My parents did 20+ years ago because they had a waterbed and loved the furniture but wanted a traditional mattress. If I remember correctly, someone came to the house to verify the measurements and then my parents went and tested out different mattresses to determine exactly what firmness they wanted etc. This was like 20 years ago and it was supposed to be all fancy because they could each personalize their side. Obviously mattresses have come a long way in 20+ years, but I would think the basic idea would be the same.
I think we will have to go that route in a few years. We inherited a sleigh bed that was a wedding present to DH's grandparents. It needs a weird size mattress so I think we will need to have one made when DD is finally old enough for it.
When you get a. Quote, would you mind updating this post so that I can get a ballpark of what to expect?
Thanks. From what I've read, it should cost $2000-$2500. We are doing it because we paid $1600 for a mattress 7 years ago and its awful and we don't really trust the big box mattress stores.
The new mattress will be hand made (hand tied). My only worry at this point is that the mattress may not be tall enough to go with our existing furniture since his views are that the current trend of thick mattresses is ridiculous!
My mom had 2 made when I was teenager for 2 antique beds of my grandmas. One was mine, one was my sisters. The sizes required custom. This was late 80s, early 90s & it was $800-1000 each. My DD1now sleeps on mine all these years later.
