I have a little bit of money in a Scottrade account in Ford and Sirius. I've had them both for years. I've never received dividends on either of them. This year, on my Dec statment I noticed I received dividends from both. Total for the year was less than $100. I haven't received a 1099 from them and on my tax page online there isn't even a 2012 year available. Are they just way late in sending them out or is it for some reason not taxable?
We have a few stocks with Sharebuilder and they have a note on their site that tax docuemnts won't be ready until 2/15. It's normal for the 2012 tax documents not to be ready yet. They will probably send you an email when they are ready.
Most brokerage houses send them out at the last minute and then amend them.
Raymond James, for instance, has announced that they will mail 1099s on Jan 31, and then mail amended 1099s by Feb 28; they are advising clients not to file until after March 15th.
Thanks! I've sold shares before and it just seems like I've gotten the documents a lot sooner than this. I knew they had until the end of the month, but never remembered it actually taking that long. I just didn't want to sit and wait since everything else is ready to go, if I wasn't even going to get one.
Ruby, that would drive me crazy if they amended something that late! How does that affect you if you've already filed?

If you receive an amended 1099 (or any amended tax form) after you have already filed, then you are supposed to amend your 1040.

see jwrite's post. It's not just my place. It's really common. You just don't file until the end of march. Or, you wait until 4/15. I usually do a rough cut on my taxes in feb, then finalize in April.

That would really piss me off. Get your shit together and send it right the first time! But, I guess when more complicated things are involved, not to mention more money, it changes a lot. Mo money, mo problems.
