I enjoyed ADOW, but found SON disappointing. Most of the charcters I liked in ADOW (ahem, Marcus) barely appeared in SON, and with the exception of Gallowglass, all the new charcters were annoying. I was bored by all the Elizabethan-era characters and how everyone treated Diana. Matthew and Diana seemed to be at their worst in the past, too.
I hope returning to the present in the third book improves things.

I liked most of the historical writing in SON. It did get a bit boring sometimes. I agree that it was not as great as the first. I need to see when the next book comes out and add it to my calendar.
I felt like it was too historical, too academic. I wanted more adventure. I'm hoping the third book will bring it all back together.
This sums up my thoughts as well. I kept waiting for something to happen...and then nothing did. I can appreciate the historial aspect of the book but I was really hoping for something more.
I was pretty disappointed with the second as well. I don't know if I was being dense, but I couldn't follow all the Elizabethian characters .... he had too many friends with similar enough personalities / interactions, and I couldn't tell them apart or remember who was who. It was a bit tedious to me. I will read the 3rd book though, and hope it gets back to the adventure and excitement that was in the first.
I very much disliked ADOW. Not a good book at all. It was promising at first but then what's his name showed up and the main character started acting stupid. I dot think I can manage another of these.

I actually preferred SON to ADOW. I liked Diana more before Matthew came along in the first book, too. They both learn a lot and she comes into her own in ADOW. The historical focus also helped-- I'm a Tudor buff and I think the portrayal of Good Queen Bess was probably one of the most accurate ones I've encountered in fiction.
