I just got my one year test results back and everything is perfect. I feel like celebrating, but this will have to do since I'm sick in bed. <)
Some of you might may remember, while we were pregnant, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had surgery in December. Although thyroid cancer is "the best cancer to have", because it is so slow moving and has a very low mortality rate, the fact that it had spread to surrounding lymphnodes and I was pregnant made it terrifying. Surgery went well, they felt like they got good margins and I was told I would not need to have follow up treatment, as originally planned, in the months following LO's birth which would have meant seperation for at least two weeks. Everything since has been textbook and we are thrilled!
My Dr. presented my case at the national thyroid cancer something or other and it generated so much discussion that he never got to present his second case. I think it's great that it might help someone else get diagnosed sooner. I guess my scans looked pretty good and he really only did a biopsy on one area that looked slightly suspicious because he was being extra cautious due to the pregnancy. Thank goodness he did and can share the before and after scans with colleagues to show them what a non typical thyroid cancer might look like.
Thanks letting me celebrate here and be an AW! (heart)
That is so awesome!!!!! So happy for you Wishing you lots more good health and awesome test results in the future!
That is amazing! Congratulations, Bean. I am so glad you are cancer free. I hope when you feel better that you take the time to celebrate.
Side question because I missed all of this! How did you get diagnosed?
It isn't very interesting but here is how it happened! I was already being followed by an endocrinologist because I was diagnosed with graves disease, which was causing severe hyperthyroidism, in 2010 after not getting my period after stopping BCP when we wanted to TTC. They tried to manage it with meds but I didn't respond enough and I also have developed a multinodular goiter (gosh I hate that word). So I had radio active iodine treatment in order to kill part/all of the thyroid which would make me hypothyroid which is considered safer, easier to manage and I would be able to TTC. After the treatment, which was noninvasive and didn't cause any sickness just 2 weeks of "isolation", we waited our 6-7 months before we were approved to TTC. I became hypothyroid and they were able to get my levels good with the new medication. Fast forward to November 2011, at my next ultrasound of my neck, the doctor noted almost all of the left side of the thyroid was gone but there was a sizable amount left on the right side so he said let's just biopsy it to be sure since your pregnant, I'm sure it'll be nothing but we'll have piece of mind. Well it wasn't nothing, I went back right away for another biopsy of some lymphnodes which were also positive to off to surgery I went!
If I hadn't gone off BCP who knows how long I would have been undiagnosed and if it wasn't for Olivia, he may have waited to biopsy. Everything happens for a reason
