I like this episode, but I always feel like I'm waiting for the series to really start. I like the first episode (or at least the warm fuzzy feeling at the end), but The Train Job and Bushwhacked are probably my two least favorite episodes. I do love the interview scene and the differences between Wash and Zoe, though.
As for Reavers? It's a plenty good explanation for me. I was nervous about Reavers from the first episode when Jayne was like "Reavers? I ain't goin' anywhere near Reaver territory." Because if Jayne is scared of something, I figured I probably wouldn't like it. I don't feel the need to ever explore Reavers anymore than they did in the series and movie. *shivers*
On a side note, I just IMDB'd the episodes to see what order Fox aired the episodes in. I'd always heard they'd done it totally out of order, but holy shit! It wouldn't have made any freakin' sense - no wonder it didn't succeed!
Yeah, but they're still so scary! And the music when they're around - gah! I'm a wuss when there's anything that might possibly have anything in common with zombies and eating people and brains. I'm OK with not knowing more, and with realizing that Joss would have filled in the blanks in a more complete and interesting way had the show not ended.
Kuus, thanks so much for keeping our firefly discussions going! I'm gonna sit down right now and watch this episode... And I'll be back with my thoughts!
Oh, he for sure did in the movie! Even though I'm super creeped out by Reavers, I think it would have been really interesting to see how he would have continued to draw out the story line during the show instead of doing it movie style.
Second thought: this was a good episode, and very creepy/suspenseful. I also really liked the humor in the interview scenes, and I feel like the show is doing a nice job of setting up this borderland edge-of-civilization thing.
But... I still don't like River. That's the weird girl's name, right? She just annoys me, and in this episode all the "suddenly waking up" events were... Irritating? Boring? It just doesn't seem interesting in any way. I'm hoping there's more payoff with that storyline, since I've never seen past episode four!
Aw fuck, Muddled, why do you have to rain on my parade? I guess you're right, I can't play space basketball because I hate space.
And I don't think we were supposed to get an answer on the Reavers in this episode. They mainly used them as a plot device to explain how "uncivilized" the edges of the Alliance territory can be--so that Captain Mal can say that the edges of space drive you insane and make you less-than-human, while the Melrose Place captain is all "La la, I love civilization." I'm not sure if I agree with Mal's explanation of the Reavers, but they are definitely creepy.
Did I ever tell you about the time when I went to a bar that happened to be having a karaoke night --as bars do-- and the bartender was an out of work actress --as bartenders are-- and when it was her turn at the mic, she belted out "don't rain on my paraaaaaade" or whatever that song from Gypsy (?) is called as she served customers. Fun night.
