I am so tired of paying for cable. Based on recs here, I'm looking into getting a Roku or Apple tv. DH is on board , but there is one hitch. He loves to watch our local sports teams on their cable channel (NESN). It's the only thing he asks for so I hate to cut it out for him. Can he still get access to these games with a Roku or Apple tv? Thanks!
You'd have to either be able to watch online or use an antenna to get network tv. There isn't an app for watching sports (at least that I know of)
That being said, I LOVE my apple tv. Works so well for watching Netflix and Hulu, plus I can listen to music, look at pictures, etc. I'm not a sports fan though, so the lack of sports wasn't a concern to me.
The Regional Sports Networks are rough , you can't usually get the games online live. If H just wants to have the sports on in the background, you can buy MLB.tv, NBA league pass broadband, MLS etc. Everything but football is available, but they blackout local games live.
Football is OTA except for the ESPN game and the NFL Network game.
Yeah, we also have cable only for football. And we get HBO for a couple of months in the spring to watch Game of Thrones.
Do you get directv? If you're not on Sunday Ticket then cable only gets an extra 1 game/week for half the year and 2/week for the other half
Also Sunday Ticket is a ripoff. You can go to a bar, drink beer at bar prices, and at 1 beer/hour for 6 hours of football you still spend less. Signed, disgruntled former Sunday Ticket subscriber.

We are more college football fans than pro though we watch both. We have Dish and there are a lot of games we like to watch that only air on ESPN, ESPNU, etc. Plus, sadly, spending 6 hours at a sports bar to watch football is simply out of the question for us. It's hard enough to be able to really concentrate on a day game at home where DD has all of her toys immediately available. I wonder if we will get to watch football AT ALL next year when we have a 3 year old and a baby. Sigh.

If I was single, MAYBE. I love having to not drag myself out of the house, deal with other fans (hello creepy fan of my team that was basically hanging all over me), be able to hear my team, be able to get a seat for my game without having to get there two hours early. The ticket is ridiculously expensive but I love it.
We have both, and also have cable, but I know that AppleTV offers some sports subscriptions (MLB for sure) that you can pay for. Depending which others they offer, that could work for your husband. DH and I are only into football, and all our home teams are shown on the networks, so we've never had to worry about not seeing a game. With an antenna, could you pull in some additional locally broadcast over the air sports?

We looked into AppleTV and paying for the MLB.com app so we could stream baseball games. Turns out, our local team games are blacked out on MLB and we can only get them on cable.
We've cut cable for now but will probably go back when baseball season starts
