Guys, my sister is doing really great. She says she has minimal pain in her incision, but her crotch is really super swollen and that hurts her (she pushed for 4hrs). For those of you who pushed, but ended up with a c-section, did you have similar experiences? Her OB warned her that the incision would get more painful. I was able to assure her that the crotch swelling would go down really soon, but I can't give her any insight on her incision.

I labored overnight, pushed for 3 hours and then had a c-section. I was seriously funked up. My incision hurt, my crotch hurt and I damaged a nerve in my thigh from pushing and had a numb spot for like 2 months. I also ended up with eclampsia and severe swelling. I didn't feel totally better until maybe 6 weeks or so later? It's like healing from any major surgery.
Oh wait, this wasn't about me? Lol, oops. What was your question again?
Anyway, I was on percocets for a while and then moved to ibuprofen. I'm glad your sister is feeling good relatively speaking!

Aw, beautiful!
My incision hurt like a mofo for a few weeks after, maybe 2. And then it was very sore and sensitive. I took the Tylenol religiously but didn't use the harder stuff. I found that it didn't really work, just made me loopy. By 4 weeks pp it felt pretty normal except for being numb. The area is still numb but I am holding out hope that I will one day regain feeling there!

I took pain killers (tylenol and advil) pretty much around the clock for 2 weeks. I couldnt drive (stick) for a little over 5 weeks because of incisional pain. If I remember correctly it wasnt until after 6-7 weeks that things felt "normal" again. I still have numbness to the incision and it does get itch every now and then, but I would definately say to give it at least 6 weeks to stop feeling painful. She looks great btw!! Congrats to her!

Ruby, my sister's feet and legs are SUPER swollen! I guess her BP is OK. The first day, they had those pressure things on her legs that inflated and deflated, but now they've just told her to walk around.
My other sister and I didn't have that so we all assume it's surgery-related, but haven't confirmed.

My recovery after rough labor + c-section was much longer than my recovery after just a c-section. I remember it being at least 2 weeks until I felt human, and 6 weeks before I felt normal (as opposed to just 2 days to feel pretty good and a week to feel almost normal after the RCS). I have no lingering issues.

Dix, make sure if she is swollen she checks her BP. I didn't develop the eclampsia until I got home. The first couple of days in the hospital my BP was slightly elevated but nothing alarming, so I didn't think anything of it. The only reason I knew there was an issue is because my swelling didn't go down. I ended up on a diurectic and beta blockers. If the swelling doesn't improve, she should call her doctor.

They probably pumped her full of fluid post op. that's one of the things that turned out to be really bad for me bc of my undiagnosed heart defect-the fluid was a stress on my heart. I had the moon boots the whole time I was in the hospital.

They did pump her full of fluids. I remember her telling me and pointing it out to me as those things were on her legs.
Ruby, now that you mention that, I have another IRL friend who that happened to and she ended up hospitalized for a few days after her baby was born! Good tip and I'll make sure they are on top of it.
She was already talking about kiddo #2 (I thought this would scare her off) and about how she'd just do a repeat c-section. I was just thinking about how she'd probably think that was a breeze after what she went through this time.
Man, she makes me feel so wimpy. After I had Edie (vaginal delivery with 2nd degree natural tear), I couldn't even shower by myself. Not only is she showering easily and independently, but she's up and around the room like it's nothing! She hasn't yet changed a diaper because bending over is tough, but of course it is!

Wow, she is doing great. I also had a vaginal and 2nd degree tear with a post partum hemorrhage/blood transfusion and I was in really rough shape for weeks. I definitely couldn't shower alone. She is a warrior! I'm happy to hear it.
The boots were on the first 12 hours and then I had to walk. I was off percocet with DS at 4 days post-op. DD I had oxy the first day, realized what the med was at 12 hours post-op and refused and just had advil.
I felt the recovery was much easier the second time around. I was picking up DS before leaving the hospital. I had no incision pain and no numbness. This last one was cut lower than the first.
I guess I'm the minority in that I really didn't feel that recovery was that bad. I was doing minimal walking by myself the same day & the next day I was trucking it across the hospital to the nicu. I took Percocet for about a day or 2, then just stuck with the high dose of Tylenol.. The worst part for me was the constipation & my lady bits. They have me a catherter without drugs. Ouch
And question for you CS ladies: are you getting ingrown hairs on your insision site? How are preventing them? I keep getting them & it's not cool.

My incision felt pretty good by the time I left the hospital. By my 2 week appointment, I felt great and I drove myself to the followup at the OB. That was with a ton of complications and a lot of swelling. I'd say it was around day 6 that I started to feel back to almost normal. Also, I had 50 people at my house from a bris on day 8 and I was feeling ok.

It sounds like she is doing amazingly well. That's awesome! Those kind of recovery stories boggle me because mine was so bad but I'm glad not everyone has to be so miserable. I think her crotch should feel better pretty soon. After all the pushing and tears with D I had to shuffle my feet for 2 days or so and then I felt pretty good down there considering.
I got cathed without drugs a couple times. I don't remember it being bad?
Mine was really bad but maybe it's because I had just given birth and my vag was all torn up?
Must be. Now, the bladder spasms when I needed a cath and didn't have one, those were a bitch. Like, a liter and a half of pee came out when I finally got one.
My recovery was pretty easy (I pushed for 3 hrs then had a c/s). The best piece of advice from the nurses: Take the full prescription of drugs, even if you are starting to feel better. It is easier to take the meds as opposed to stopping and having everything get really painful and having to start the drugs again. I was on oxy for 10 days, ibu for 14 days (alternating oxy and ibu). Also...TAKE COLACE!!! The first poo was brutal, but would have been much worse without colace.
I'd say I felt 100% normal again by 6 weeks. Good luck to her!
What may help with diaper changes is to get out of bed and raise it as high as it goes. I then put DD on the bed and changed her. DH never stayed overnight and the only day they took her out of the room was the first night even though I requested every night.
Another tip: I couldn't get out of bed from laying flat after DS so I made sure I could before leaving with DD. Our guest room that I slept in after DS is currently DS's room.

I had swelling that didn't go down all the way for a couple of weeks after my first c/s. Of course, I was pumped full of fluids for two days during an induction and even more fluids after the surgery. I didn't end up with eclampsia, but I would definitely have her keep an eye on it.
After DD, I had swelling that lasted longer in one leg, so they send me for an u/s to make sure there wasn't a problem. They couldn't find anything on the u/s and it ended up going down on it's own a couple of days later.
I had 2 sections, no pushing though.

I also had no pushing (well, I had some involuntary pushing with DS, but I was only dilated to a 4).
For the first c/s, the boots were on for 12 hours, and then I had to get out of bed and walk around. The second time, the boots were only on about 6 hours before I was up and walking around. I also knew to request an abdominal binder the second time. It made getting up and down and moving around much easier, which was good for my recovery. The incision was still tender for about 6 weeks both times, and it hurt more when I overdid.
I think the hardest thing to remember is to take it easy and not try to do too much at one time. Walking around is good, but doing things like laundry (lots of lifting/bending) and vacuuming (I was specifically told to avoid this for a couple of weeks) can cause you to hurt for awhile. If the incision starts to hurt more, have her try to rest and see if it feels better.
Actually, you know what was one of the worst parts of the whole experience, if not the worst? The referred pain I got in my shoulder the day after surgery. It's gas from the surgery that traveled up to the joint. Oh my lord, I thought I was actually dying. Thank goodness for dilauded (sp?).

For me it was the freaking itching from the anesthesia. I still remember going crazy from that. Both my sections were at night and there was no sleep happening because I was trying to claw my skin.
The same thing happened to me. I was so so so swollen under my incision and my legs. My legs felt like they were gonna rip open. I remember poking under my incision over and over because before I had the cs I could feel my pelvic bone, even when pregnant, but after I had to push down a few inches to get to it. She just needs to keep her feet up as much as she can. She is gonna be really sore, poor thing.
