I didn't have any pushing but I had a very violent c-section because Madison's hips were lodged in my pelvis. I had a lot of swelling and bruising around my incision site and on my pubic area. I asked for a frozen diaper one night while I was resting so that I could have some comfort.
I'm jealous of all your ladies who got percocet. I only got tylenol with codeine and ibuprofen. If we have a second I think I'm going to claim an allergy to codeine so I can get the percoet. Percocet is actually safer in a BFing mom than codeine so I don't know why it isn't standard of care. At least they were nice enough to give me 2 at a time.
Just a tip for her.. I really found it helped to put a pillow in between my legs when I was getting in and out of bed. Made the incision pull and hurt less that way.
Guys, my sister is doing really great. She says she has minimal pain in her incision, but her crotch is really super swollen and that hurts her (she pushed for 4hrs). For those of you who pushed, but ended up with a c-section, did you have similar experiences? Her OB warned her that the incision would get more painful. I was able to assure her that the crotch swelling would go down really soon, but I can't give her any insight on her incision.
She's really doing AMAZING. I mean, look at her.
I did have some pain in the crotch region, as well as the incision site. It was all awfully painful. I got to 10cm and pushed for 3 hrs - he never engaged fully so I wasn't sure why the crotch hurt but it did! Maybe because his head was stuck and it was hard for them to get him out? Dunno. Anyway, it'll ALL get better. Just keep taking the pain meds and rest!

It's the standard at my hospital but I got a weird reaction to it (the shakes) and had to get tylenol 3 and ibuprofen. It wasn't enough for me, the percocet was SO much better.
I was really paranoid so I talked to the anesthesiologist AND looked it up when I was taking the pain meds and remember that there's not much of a different between Tylenol 3 w/ codeine (look up codeine) vs Percocet, both are in category L3 ("moderately safe") :/ You're a pharmacist though so you must know what you're talking about Is this incorrect info? I got it here (and from the dr): kellymom.com/bf/can-i-breastfeed/meds/pain-meds/

The issue with codeine in breastfeeding is that codeine is metabolized to morphine and that is what relieves the pain. Some babies are super metabolizers and way too much codeine gets changed into morphine and it can make them excessively sleepy and has even caused some infant deaths. It is rare but I would rather use a drug that didn't have that issue, which percocet does not.
It just boggles my mind that at our hospital they would give the same med to a c-section mom as a vag birth with a first degree tear. I mean, many dentists give percocet for wisdom teeth removal now but my abdominal surgery just gets me tylenol with codeine? Nice.

Isn't the super metabolizer issue a genetic anomaly though and not very typical? I worried about that bc on top of having the drugs for the c-section, H and I got SUPER INSANELY sick and coughed like maniacs after the hospital and needed codeine cough syrup. My stepdad is a biochemist (so is H) so we talked about this a few times and he explained it to me that it PROBABLY is safe but I guess you never know! I thought it was too much freaking codeine, even though the doc said it was ok. I am surprised at how much they allow for. My kid seems fine and has no issues (was sleepy but not sleepier than other newbs), but next time the whole drug issue is most of the reason why I want to try for a vag birth again (if the next kid is smaller, that is).
That is weird about your hospital. Did you ask for percocet? They were really adamant that the reaction I had was me having anxiety (bullshit), not a reaction to percocet and only when I asked for it would they give me something else. So much so that they brought in a fucking social worker to ask me questions. I was pissed. I have never had the shakes like that and it was IMMEDIATELY after that shit entered my system :/ Sigh. BTW I got straight up morphine after the c-section. I had some crazy uterine infection and a lot of bleeding, so maybe it was more than they usually give for c-sections but I can't understand why they only give you tylenol 3 for that degree of pain...jesus.
Yeah, the ultra metabolizer is a rare, genetic thing but if there is some other drug available that will control pain better and not have the possibility of that, I'll take that.
With regards to asking for percocet, I was too focused on trying to rest in between trudging to the NICU every 3 hours to feed Madison to even care about myself. Also, I figured if I asked for something different, they would think I was some drug seeking crack whore.

Haha! Aw. I hear ya. I did feel really weird asking for drugs but I was in a LOT of pain - it seems like more than most of the c-section Mamas I talk to. Hopefully you will get what you need next time!
