We did ours today (we requested it early for multiple reasons). It was awful! 3 vials from her arm! I don't even want to talk about it . I was expecting a heel prick!
oh no! that sounds terrible. I don't want to do that to my baby. Even the prick in the leg for the vaccines, it kills me every time even though she only cries for about 10 seconds. But her face, so confused and sad . Waaaahhh
Oh man, I am hoping this is better than when she was first born. I know she is older so I hope that helps but they had difficulties finding her little vein in her arms. She had blood taken a lot in the hospital.

When Dylan had his it was a finger prick that dripped into 2 little vial things. I don't think the prick itself bothered him but he was pissed that we were holding him down to fill the vials.

So sorry it was so hard on you! I thought finger pricks were standard for 9/12 months? Our pedi did it at 9 months in the office., like rainbow, she was more pissed at her finger being held so they could fill the little vials.

A lot of places do the stick now because it's a much better specimen. A huge percent of the time heel or finger stick specimens we get have to be redone because there's either not enough or the specimen came too slow and is clotted. If it makes you feel any better a venipuncture hurts way less than a finger stick (heel sticks shouldn't be done at this age if a child is standing or walking). I let new phlebs practice sticks on me all the time, but there's no way I let anyone do a finger prick!
I remember when DD had hers done she stopped crying after the initial stick and was looking around the room, then she looked down and saw the needle still in her arm and started crying again lol. I told her it couldn't hurt too bad if she didn't remember it was there.

bebeetmoi- they sent us to the lab for it so maybe it's something different?
ruby412- I made my H hold her down. I couldn't do it! We went at 7am this morning just so he could come. He was thrilled, lol.
wildcatprincess- you're right about the pain factor- finger prick is way worse than arm. I also used to let newbies practice with my veins all the time! And I didn't even think about the clotting. That makes sense and now I feel a little better about the venipuncture.

Poor V! I am not looking forward to this at all. Matt comes to every appointment to hold her for shots while I sob anyway. And when she had that febrile seizure, they had to draw blood in the hospital, and I had to leave the room and wail outside because I almost fainted. Ugh, it's so hard being a mom sometimes! Good news, it's all done for V and she got over it quick. What a brave girl!

Sucks, right? We had to take V for allergy bloodwork and the only time te blood would come out was when she cried. It took far too long for me. Glad Violet recovered quickly!
What?! I didn't know this was going to happen. I can't even imagine getting M to hold still long enough for all of that. She has her 9 month appt tomorrow, I am definitely asking about this. I'm glad it's over for her now, I'm sure it sucked for you both!
