I knew this! But, I never use ketchup out of those pump containers after my friend told me that mold sits on top and they just mixed it in when they added more ketchup at the place she worked. Sorry, I feel I need to spread the word!

That is so yucky, but I have to wonder about places where there is a high turnover of ketchup, like stadiums / McDonald's etc. My (perhaps hopeful) logic says, ketchup is full of preservatives, it doesn't go bad easily and the ketchup probably gets used up quick enough in the high turnover places that it's probably a non-issue. Also, some of those pump containers are refilled with a plastic baggy of ketchup that gets fixed to the pump so there's no topping up, just an empty bag to dispose of. And on top of all that, I've never heard of anyone getting really sick from old ketchup. So as grossed out as I am by the thought of old ketchup, I'll probably still keep eating it.
