I think I would for a family close family member but I wouldn't for a stranger. I worry that something would happen to my other kidney or that something would go wrong and wreck my liver (or whatever I'm donating). I need to be around and healthy for my kids.
Plus, I found out that when you donate a kidney you cannot take ibupofen ever again! I don't take meds often but when I do, that is the only thing that works. ^ and that is the worst argument ever.
For family and friend, no question. For a stranger, I really don't know. I would like to think so, but it depends on what organ it is and my general state of health at the time. I know it's silly, but I've heard the horror stories of people donating an organ and then something terrible happening healthwise. Basically, now that I'm a mother, my health is more important to me than it has ever been because I want to be around for DD as long as possible.
You just never know if a family member will need your organ in the future, and I would hate to be in a position where I couldn't help family because I helped someone else.
I could only be a living organ donor to my family. I would hate to give a kidney to a stranger and then my child end up needing one and I can't give it to them (long shot, I know, but I do think about these things since my Dad was a transplant recipient and Rosalie had some renal issues early on).
Family and friends, definitely. If I had a friend, who knew of a child or a friend, that was in need of donation and I happened to be a match I would seriously consider that, too.
