I was surprised by the responses in the LL thread - I don't flush them b/c I just sort of always assumed they were really hard on plumbing and I didn't want to deal with a backup.
I used to when I wore them, but I use the DivaCup now.
My sorority house was on the historic register and we were not supposed to flush them there because the plumbing was so old, but other than that, I always have.
Oh, this is gross--when I first met H he used to flush condoms down the toilet. I freaked out the first time I saw him do it and quickly set him straight.
I have in the past but not at our current house. We are on a septic so we are only allowed to flush certain things. We switched to Quilted northern TP because its made for septic tanks. Tampons are a no no.
I did my entire life until about 18 months ago when many people (here and IRL) told me that was crazy. I now do not flush them at my home or the homes of others, but continue to do so in public places.
I used to until our main line backed up, which was more related to tree roots than tampons, though. DH then suggested that I probably don't do that anymore (that was an awkward conversation to have).

Never. I grew up in an old house with a septic tank - my father made it clear no tampons to be flushed. Its horrible for newer plumbing as well and it's just not necessary.

I used to until I moved into this house (which is on a septic system). I finally got the motivation to switch to the DivaCup (one of the best things ever) because one of our cats likes to dig in the trash

Haha, mine too! We didn't use them until after our first child was born and I didn't want to go back on hormonal birth control, but I saw him do it once and was like WTF are you doing man?! Wrap that up and throw it in the trash!

I used to always flush (didn't know better) until I moved into my H's house that has septic. We had to replace our septic system last year ($$$) and there is no way I'm flushing anything that could possibly hurt it. And like I mentioned in the other thread, we had a large plumber bill at our rental property thanks to tampons clogging the pipes, so even if it doesn't happen often, I don't think it's worth it at all. plus we all know by now that everyone should switch to the diva cup, right?

No. Our house is over 100 years old and we have a septic system. My cousin is a plumber and tampons are one of the biggest reasons he gets called out. It's worst at the old rental houses on campus.
