Whoa! That is super cheap, even for Turkish Airlines. Love, love, love that airline.
I wanted to get away for a week by myself & was seriously contemplating just wandering around Istanbul but alas, I'd feel obligated to visit the in-laws.
mx - what part of Turkey are you moving to? Are you a Turkish citizen? Will you be working there? I'd love to move there for a few years eventually but we haven't looked into my options yet.
I have a regional job that covers the Middle East. I'm currently based in DC, but my employer is relocating me to Istanbul (and I am thrilled, because IST is awesome and because I am tired of being 8 hours behind all of my colleagues).
That is awesome. The only thing holding me back from moving over there is my concern about stalling my career (DH is from there, so no worries for him), but maybe I just need to look a bit harder.
Also- get your children passports, people! I guess I am the only one who grew up with parents who feared having to leave the country overnight due to some political turmoil and always made sure we had up-to-date passports?
Probably should get DS a passport. We're planning on taking vacation that week (to get away from the mardi gras crowds) and DH is dying to go back to Turkey.
After ESF said that Turkey was her best trip ever I was a little disappointed we flew through Healthrow to Cyprus instead of Istanbul with a 2 day layover. This is good info to know.
As for getting a passport for a kid. It is pretty easy. We did our renewals the Saturday before Veteran's day and had them back the within 10 days.

Same. I wouldn't be comfortable saying my dad's family "fled" Chile, but let's just say they left under Communism for complicated reasons.
So yeah, my brother and I had passports from birth. My mom took me to Colombia at nine weeks old.
I loved Istanbul, but I don't know that I'd do it in February. Half the fun is wandering the city and crossing the bosphorus, both of which might not be as much fun in the cold.

Delta just dropped Qatar, Turkish Air, and Kuwait Airlines as interline partners since it was assisting their operations. There's some internal dispute going on there. Sounds like a price war heating up. I'd keep your eyes open for deals in the next couple months.
