He got his first heartworm injection on Monday and we've been keeping him calm ever since, which is easy because he's a really calm and quiet dog. He has progressively been eating less and less of his food and this morning he wouldn't come to us and just sat by the door paralyzed.
His ears and head were cold, he wouldn't eat and DH had to pick him up to put him on his bed in his crate. He wasn't very responsive at all. I was crying like a baby, ugh what a mess.
I got some pain medicine in him and got him up to the vet's office. He was feeling a lot better after he got the pain medicine and they gave me another kind to give him along with the one at home. All his vitals looked good they said. They also said that sometimes the pain is really bad from the needle they injected into his back so hopefully these additional pills will help him. He ate breakfast and everything once I got him home and didn't need to be carried.
We've only had this dog a week and a half. I am so upset watching him go through this treatment and angry at people who don't take care of their dogs enough to give them heartworm preventative.

Oh, dl! Just think of how unbearable it would be for foster pup to go through this with someone who didn't care as much as you do! You are doing an amazing thing!
I had no idea the treatments were so painful. Poor pup! And poor you! I would have freaked.
Me neither, apparently some dogs do better with it than others. The needle they use is so big that it goes through all their back muscles, so some pups maybe in more pain than others depending on how they handle it. I came down the stairs after getting ready and saw him by the front door and my heart sank. He is always usually peppy and happy to see DH or I and he was just really out of it.
