I have a problem with these sorts of 'stories' - what kind of place has an automatic 18% tip on a $35 meal? I could see if it was a group of 6+/8+ - but then the bill would be higher.
Plus there's a pretty high possibility that someone just wrote that crap on there after the fact just to make someone else look bad.

Why couldn't it be a party of 6/8 with seperate checks?

How do you know there weren't 8 people at his table that received separate checks?

It might have been a large party where the restaurant allowed seperate checks for guests. I have seen that done many times when out with groups, the automatic tip of parties of 6 or greater is still included in the individual bills.

One of the articles I read about this was that the guy was dining as part of a group of 20.

ALSO, the person didn't refuse to leave 18% because they wanted to only leave 10% or something like that...the person left ZERO percent. THAT is a dick move regardless of how you feel about automatic gratuity or how much a server deserves...they should have given something!

Ok - good point - could be separate checks.
That still doesn't make it legit/real. I mean - totally possible and if so a total dick move - but still unlikely since most of the Pastors I know are not like that.
A man claiming to be a pastor apparently tried to stiff a waiter on a tip, explaining that his work for God absolved him of having to leave one.
A photo of the receipt, posted to Reddit.com, shows a bill for $34.93 with an automatic 18 percent gratuity (or $6.29) added above a blank space for an additional tip.
"I give God 10%," the diner wrote on the receipt, scratching out the automatic tip. "Why do you get 18?" He then wrote "Pastor" above his signature, and an emphatic "0" where the additional tip would be. (The automatic gratuity, however, had already been added to the total.)
The Reddit user who submitted the image explained in the comments section that the receipt was part of a total bill for a party of 20, which is why the gratuity was automatically added.
“Parties up to eight ... may tip whatever they’d like, but larger parties receive an automatic gratuity," the server wrote. "It’s in the computer, it’s not something I do.”
The server added: “They had no problem with my service, and told me I was great. They just didn’t want to pay when the time came.”
Scribbling notes on receipts has become something of a trend. Earlier this month, the manager of a North Carolina Red Robin surprised an overdue pregnant woman by comping her meal.
“Once seated, a manager came up to us and started talking,” the woman's husband told Consumerist. “He was extremely friendly and jokingly asked my wife if this was her last meal before heading to the hospital."
When the check came, a note from the manager next to her portion of the bill read: "MOM 2 BEE GOOD LUC."
“It was a pleasant surprise and made my tired-of-being-pregnant wife a little more cheery," the man said.

true. unless it was really really really crappy service. and then the person leaving no tip should explain it & man up.

Why does the fact that most of the pastors you know are nice mean that it's unlikely there is a dick pastor out there?

Ok - the bolded changes my tune - sounds like this is legit. That's a crappy thing to do!

Ditto. I thought he was going to say I will gave 10 b/c I give god 10%
the server did get the 18% tip...the pastor put in 0.00 for additional tip along with a message bitching about the 18% tip that was included
NO, he scribbled out the 18% amount, which would have been $6 and change...AND put 0 for additional. He re-wrote the original total before tip...so he left zero tip.
ETA: no, nevermind, you are right, I just read the actual article...

This was an incredibly nice gesture, but the editor in me can't help but be annoyed that he added an extra letter to "be" and then had to trim one off of "luck." lol

the total before tip was $34.93. The 18% was $6.something. He scratched out the $6.something, put zero in additional, then wrote $34.93 in the total line. Should have been $40.something with the 18% automatic.

I went to Olive Garden at lunch, with two friends, and our bill came to $42, and there was an automatic 18% gratuity.
So the Times Square Olive Garden is one of those kinds of places! I found it *really* odd though.
I agree that it could have been written later. That doesn't really look like anything other than young girl writing to me? A few of these viral receipts have been exposed to be fraudulent.

No, I still think I'm right...that's how the receipts around my area do it...the automatic tip is done/undebatable...but it prints this way to show you how gratuity you have paid and gives you a chance to add additional tip and readjust the total. By not adding any more, he keeps the total at 34.93 which includes the tip. Him scratching it out does nothing...it's already in there.
Plus the way I read the article, I feel like it confirms it.

$6.29 is 18% of $34.93. Sorry.
Yeah...I think the article is misleading b/c that one sentence says, "...the automatic gratuity, however, had already been added"...and yet the math doesn't work out right that way.
If there was an automatic 18% tip on a $35 bill, I wouldn't give any other tip. I doubt I'd write a snarky message on the receipt but I wouldn't give them an additional tip. Around here you only usually see an automatic tip of it's a group, 6 or more.
