(blah blah blah, long time poster on the nest, posted on MM in the past, haven't posted here but have lurked).
My husband is in his mid 50s. He travels a lot for work (drives and flies) and is the breadwinner of our family. I could not afford even our mortgage, let alone all our bills, if he died or became incapacitated.
We have a dangerous hobby of horseback riding.
He has a preexisting condition (COPD).
We're thinking due to his age and his preexisting condition that term life insurance is a better deal for us. It would be more affordable and he'd probably stop riding horses due to his age before the end of the term. Does that make sense?
So, in our situation (age, hobbies, job, preexisting condition), is term life ins. preferred?

Go with term. There are reasons for whole life, like to pay inherence taxes on a family business, but term is generally the better way to go for most situations.
You could try getting Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance, which would be cheaper, but would exclude anything related to COPD (and probably anything other than extremely rare medical events).
