If you're white, they'll mostly avoid offering you really weird stuff. They will tell you what it is. Variety depends on the restaurant, but where I go it's lots of steamed things (dumplings, filled buns), some fried things. Very delicious things. The place also has chicken feet, pig feet, tripe... but they don't offer me such things.
Make sure you get the shrimp with the rice noodle wrap. So good. When I do dim-sum, it's with my Taiwanese MiL, so we get offered everything. You get used to seeing things like chicken feet.

thank you so much!!! we are going to San Francisco next weekend and starlily recommended Great Eastern (?) for dim sum. DS has a peanut allergy - but we all love seafood and no other allergies. I'm getting excited to go eat!

Just remember "ha cheung" and "cha siu bao"...pronounced pretty much like you would expect. That's the shrimp in rice noodle and pork bun respectively, and they are DELICIOUS! I also love the Chinise broccoli. The sticky rice dishes are good too. Mmmm...I want dim sum now.

I am going to SF next weekend too and I love dim sum. I have a peanut allergy and I know some of the dumplings have peanuts in them so you may want to ask to be on the safe side. I personally love yank sing for their har gow. They use lobster! I also love Koi Palace in Daly City. Have a great time!
