Changing my name seemed easy at first. It is now becoming a huge PITA, mostly because of the military and college. How was your name changing experience? Easy or a Pain?

I thought it was relatively easy, and I couldn't wait to change mine!
SS had the longest wait, which was maybe about 45 mins, but DL place had no wait that day (not sure how that happened) and most of my cards were able to be changed over the phone except for my bank accounts. It was also convenient for me since I moved right after the wedding so I did name change and address change at the same time with all my people/business. Better than having to do it twice!

I'm still in the name changing process.
Personal: Social Security was easy, I just had to drive an hour. Cell provider: easy - just did it online. Credit card: easy - did it over the phone last night. I have yet to change my bank accounts or my driver's license. I'm not going to bother with student loans. Have yet to change for car loan.
Work: I gave my new SS card to HR and they took care of the rest. Although my email has not been changed yet.
All in all, it's been pretty simple. It's just a pain in the ass to remember all the places you use your name. Doctor's office, dry cleaners, tanning salon, etc.
I think its mostly a problem because I am transfering schools. Everything is still under my old last name so I couldnt use my new last name in my hawaii.edu email address. Boo
Except for the fact that my SS and DL now have different names, it was pretty easy. SS let me change it to Jennifer Maiden Married, but the DMV (after standing in line for 3.5 hours!) told me I couldn't change my middle name without a court order. So my DL and passport say Jennifer Middle Married.
I didn't change it at work, I changed it at school because I wanted my name on their records to match my passport when I went to China, and I have some bills/accounts that are still in my maiden name and some in my married name. I'm all over the place. lol
For most stuff it was easy, at work, it sucked and still isn't fully changed. It wasn't my fault and I really don't care, it is changed on all the important stuff.
I had the worst time at the DMV though. The first time I went there close a whole 5 min before I got there, the second time they wouldn't do anything with out a birth cert, 2 pieces of mail with my address, or something, my ss card and some other things. I was like really! Third time was the charm.

Most was easy. But it took an entire year for my work to change it, and my doctor still switches back and forth between my maiden and married just about every week. Sometimes they even use my previous address. Very annoying.
SS was easy, I made an appointment, and was in and out in 10 minutes. DMV was pretty easy, in and out within a half an hour. Passport was easy, costly, but easy, all I had to do was "renew" and give a copy of the marriage license. Bills/Credit cards were easy
Work however was a PITA. I believe I have it half changed? My HR department can't keep their shit together. Though funny story, the IT department got it done, and I excitedly e-mailed my H with the changed e-mail. He responded with "that's great, but it's spelled wrong." Yup, apparently they missed an I the first time around.
Cellphone was a PITA and I am not even sure if my caller ID is right now or not (we went back and forth with Sprint for like four months trying to get them to change it, and they kept struggling. It was right on the bill, wrong on the caller ID.)
I was also amazed by the random people that wanted a copy of my marriage license to try and change my name. (Ezpass sticks out as the strangest.)

That's crazy, my DMV had no problem moving my Maiden name to replace my middle.
There are a few places here and there where they have Elisabeth Middle Married instead of Elisabeth Maiden Married. One being my doctor's office.
Don't judge but I've had to have my name changed 3x
All in all it's not so bad...
SS was easy- worse part for me was the waiting in line and having to take time off of work because of the cake hours the gov't offices keep.
DMV was easy- again worse part was the waiting in line.
Bills/Credit cards were easy.
Work however, was a pain in the ass and took months for them to change it. I think it still shows my maiden name in the system because our IT dept was trying to give me access to something a week ago and they kept telling my boss I didn't work here.
Our corp HR is located in NJ and our local HR group is USELESS. Corp HR won't even deal with us we have to go through our local group and they notoriously fuck things up. They refused to change my name until I had both my new SS card and correct info on my DL in hand.
Plus the less people that know my very personal business the more I like it. People around here have very loose lips and it pisses me off. I've thought about looking for another job but I hate to give up my salary, vacation time, and benefits.
My cellphone wasn't an issue. At the time DH and I weren't locked into contracts so we switched carriers and went on a family plan.
I too have a crazy story to tell regarding my name....
Shortly after we were married we went on a cruise with my MIL. She booked the trip and had my reservation under my married name (we didn't realize this until a few days before we were leaving). I hadn't updated my documents yet but her travel agent told her it shouldn't be a problem.
I knew I only needed my DL because we were going to KeyWest and MX but brought my marriage license just in case. When we went to check in on the ship I almost wasn't allowed to get on. In addition to my DL and ML they also wanted to see a copy of my birth certificate which makes no sense to me since it has my maiden name on it and after I divorced I never went back to my maiden. I don't know about you guys but I just don't carry my birth certificate in my purse just in case.
Luckily the captain let us board but talk about shitting your pants. Whew!

I changed my drivers license no problem. I went to the ss office once, it was a 4 hour wait so I left and never went back. That was 6 years ago :/. My accountant said its not a huge issue so I never bothered to go back but I probably should, eventually...
