I have to go pick tile for our bathtub surround today (should have left 2 hours ago, but its cold and snowy).
H planned on only tiling as far up as the old tile was. Which is about 24" from the ceiling. Kind of like this:
I had been thinking of tiling all the way to the ceiling. More like this:
Given how hard it was to find a pic to PIP for H's vote, I think I win by default. But I'm still taking a vote (to prove my self lol).
Now, please don't get into my post from yesterday and ask why we are doing this now. I'll explain it like this 1) the grout on the old shower was falling out 2) we had planned to do it this winter 3) it has to be done before April 1 b/c then I lose him to fishing 4) He thought he was going to be out of work all week, and did the demo on Tuesday, without much consulting with me (it went from "we should do this sometime" to "we have no master shower" on Tuesday) 5) we do all our own work, so its just supplies. Probably $700 total.
I vote for all the way to the ceiling. Our surround doesn't go all the way up. Since I'm tall, water splashes off my head & onto the drywall when I shower. The paint is starting to peel a little. I want to tear out the surround & put tile all the way up to prevent nasty mold issues.

I actually like some wall at the top. I think your second picture is tile overload and I think the line between the shower and wall looks awkward when the tile goes all the way to the ceiling.
We don't have to worry about the tall thing. We are both statistical average lol We go to my Dad's house (Dad & step mom are both over 6 feet tall), and we laugh how their master suite makes us feel like little people.
But, for the resale/rental option, tall people are important
All the way to the ceiling. I think it looks better, but also i think it may lead to less wall and shower related issues down the line. I'd be afraid of wet, moldy walls with the space at the top.

When we remodeled our bathrooms, we added tile all the way to the ceiling. It looks so much better, IMO, that it's really worth the slightly more work/$. (Actually, we also tiled the ceiling, too, which I love. However, we hired out the job - it's probably not worth the kinks in the neck if you're doing the installation yourself)
Our shower is tiled like your H planned, and it's ok, but I think tile all the way up is easier to clean and keep nice, and looks nicer. Yeah tiling is a PITA, but once you're doing it, a few more square feet isn't such a biggie.
Ok, its running about 75+% for all the way to the ceiling. That's a good enough majority for me to not second guess myself. I'm off to tile shop! woohoo! Feel free to continue discussing.
If I'm lucky, we'll be showering back upstairs by Monday morning. I'm not counting on it though.
We just had our bathroom remodeled and the tile goes to the top. We previously had a gap and was told by our contractor that is was the cheap route and he wouldn't put his name on a remodel that didn't have tile to the top. We love it and I makes the area look bigger.

We have wall showing, my ILs retiled their bath and went all the way to the ceiling. I sort of like theirs a little better, both for looks and ease of cleaning.
I voted for some wall at the top. That is what we have and when I got bored with our bathroom, I painted the walls and switched out accessories to give the bathroom a whole new look without a major make over.
It looks more luxurious and modern. It will also make the tub/shower area look bigger. Leaving some wall space at the top is the cheap way to go, but not the best looking.

Can you re-grout the tile you already have?
I prefer tile all the way to the ceiling, but not enough to put in new tile if it can be avoided. Actually, I most prefer a solid shower surround, since I'm lazy and don't want to clean grout... My parents have a surround that goes all the way up and across the ceiling. I think that's pretty cool.
Can we regrout? Not at this point. I can't post a pic from the app, but the demo is done. Down to the studs.
Could we have regroutted instead? Well, we did patch the grout to tide us over, but it didn't match in color and our cleaning lady scrubbed it out. Plus, it was 4x4 plain white tile. In other words, it was 3/4 need to do something and all want to make it pretty.
