Mine is that a former coworker posted on FB that he hates Destiny's Child because they destroyed traditional women. I engaged in the argument. He and his friends are assholes.
I guess by encouraging us to be independent? It makes NO sense. He and one other gut replying talked about how they kicked off a "fad" of women being independent. Fucking idiots. That tidbit came out after I informed them that women were independent long before Destiny's Child.
Best part was that they couldn't really say what a traditional woman is/what she does. It was just about their roles as men and the woman could "stay home or have a job and I support her."
Yeah, until I heard "Independent Women" in 2000, I was totally planning to be a SAHM. That song made me get a Ph.D, dammit!
Also, uh, have these boys ever heard of the Spice Girls? Or, uh, feminism? I'm pretty sure that the "fad" of women being independent started before Destiny's Child. But you know what they say, maucat, about pearls before swine. Those FB guys sound like pigs.
Is it just me or have certain (presumably mostly white) men been getting more ballsy lately about broadcasting openly their sense of what I have heard termed as "aggrieved entitlement"?
Because like PPs have said, where exactly have you BEEN the past 30-odd years?
These are young-ish (mid-20s) Mexican-American males, most of whom are 2nd generation, I believe, so I suppose they, too are a product of their environment and culture. But still, women have been independent much longer than their lifetimes. Maybe it wasn't openly condoned, but the image of a good little wife sitting at home and doing only as get husband wishes/says seems to have gained traction as a backlash against feminism rather than any one widespread reality. I've even argue that the strict norms of the 50s, as they are presented today, were a reaction to women getting the right to vote and then working more and more outside the home during WWII.
Uh I assume by "second generation" you mean born in the same country you and I have been living in our whole lives also, so my comment about where have they BEEN??? stands.
I'm picking up what fussbucket is putting down about "aggrieved entitlement." It seems to usually come up in the "why don't women want to be like real 'traditional' women any more?!?" vein. And women do the same thing: there's a post on CEP about a female author claiming women should essentially just shut up and put out to keep men happy.
In this case, it's just a weird variation on a theme to claim that a musical group is responsible for the "fad" of independence. Because, yanno, there's no reason women might WANT equality, except if it comes packaged with a snappy chorus.
@fuss yes, I understand that. I also live in almost-Mexico and see a lot of people hanging on to that culture. I think their views are disgusting, but I also try to understand the cultural context. Blame the cultural competence training I was in for months on latino culture?
I honestly think these guys have no idea who they really want to be and think they need a woman to be their foil so that they can live out a misguided idea of masculinity learned from their fathers, the other men in their lives, and their perceptions of their mothers' roles.

UGH!
I get (on some level) that women being independent can be a bit damaging to a masculine persona... I don't agree with it, but I guess I can see how a lot of guys want to feel like they are "needed", and as more women become more independent a lot of men are having trouble coming to grips with the fact that they aren't needed the same ways they used to be.
But blaming that on a music group (or person)? REALLY??
RIGHT?! I'm so tempted to respond "apparently enough WASN'T said". But he'll say something about liberal lefties being dense or "sheeple" or something.
Is it maybe supposed to mean that guns aren't bad since two Presidents shot guns? Because even that is a really, really stupid argument. Maybe post a picture of Cheney with a gun, with "ENOUGH SAID." It would make about as much sense.
Starries, maybe that should read "How did we manage to stay together for 65 years? Because we married in a time when teen marriage was the norm, and ladies had never heard of Destiny's Child and thus did not strive for independence. We sure have hated each other all these years, and yeah, we've thrown a few punches, but at least we upheld the sanctity of marriage. Also, we like being judgmental douches."
The guy who posted it is SUPER anti-Obama (I get MULTIPLE posts a day with "Here's our Hypocrite-in-Chief" or "Good job, Obummer" (he's also VERY creative, apparently)
But I just . . . how is that anti-Obama? Obama has to wear headphones so he's a wimp? Obama wears stupid clothes while shooting? Is Obama holding the gun funny or something? I just don't get it!!!!

I don't get it either.
Are they trying to say that Obama is a hypocrite for skeet shooting since he wants to ban automatic weapons?
