we use vanicream in our house. DS has eczema and he and I both have dry itchy skin. you can pick it up at the pharmacy - but have to ask for it at the counter. it is hypoallergenic and doesn't have any dyes or scents in it at all.

Sarna works really well. Sometimes it's in the aisle, and sometimes it's at the pharmacy counter. I have a Eucerin calming itch relief in my desk drawer for when I occasionally get an itching attack.
I LOVE the Aveeno oatmeal bath packets. A bath with one of those, followed by a good slatherin' of the Aveeno skin relief lotion really helps when I have skin flare-ups. Aveeno also has a great bath oil, but it can be hard to find some times.Aside from that, I also use cortisone cream for spot treating, and even calamine lotion if its really bad. All of these things are from the drug store.
I also use the restoraderm body wash combined with the Aveeno skin relief body wash (all fragrance free). It helps keep my skin from drying out as much in the first place.
I had this while I was pregnant as well and it got really bad after I gave birth- I just wanted to tear my skin off. The Aveeno packets that a PP mentioned were great, but make sure to bathe in lukewarm water since hot water will further dry out your skin. I also used sweet almond oil all over my body and it cut way down on the itching. I just had to be sure to apply well before bed as I found that it clogged my pores when I put it on my face. Jojoba oil worked really well for my scalp (there was seriously not one inch of my body that didn't itch). I found all of those at Duane Reade.
