My kid has been a cub scout for almost five years. He started in the first grade and crosses over to boy scouts in March. While there are vague mentions about God and no atheist belt loop, there is no specificity on who or what God is. It is left to the individual, the individual and not the pack to deal with the very small portion that is about God themselves if they should so choose.

The Boy Scouts have denied boys their Eagle award if they don't believe in God. Maybe it doesn't specify which God, but they have to believe in a God.
Uh, are you saying that's a defense against allowing gay members?
Yes.
That's odd. I seem to remember that quite a lot of religions don't ban gay members. Can you explain why "religion" is a valid reason to ban all gay people?

I thought you said that BSA was a Christian organization?
I've been following the Eagle Scouts who have returned their medals because of the ban on gays as members and leaders. It's been so inspiring to read the thoughtful insights of men who reject the discrimination.
Thanks for the clarification, Habs. I think I mixed up Jupiter and Neptune in class yesterday, but now it doesn't matter because obviously they aren't real!
Duuuuuuuude, Soozy. You're a fucking bigot, OK? And you're kind of laughably bad at it, to boot.
Never mind who's convincing you you shold be thinking these things. Being a bigot is immoral and wrong and you should be ashamed of yourself.
To assert that "believing in God" == "Christian" is patently untrue on planet Earth. I'm sure the way YOU believe in YOUR god == Christian, but that's not what this discussion is about. Please try to understand the difference between you yourself and the majority of the other 7 billion people in the world.

This. My son has only been in cub scouts this year, but there is no mention of God or religion at any of our meetings. We also choose a very liberal pack that rewrote their bi-laws to state that they reject the national organizations rule banning gays from the Scouts and made it known that anyone, gay or straight, is welcome.
Also, Scouts is not a religious based organization. There are packs and troops that are chartered by religious groups just as there are packs and troops that are chartered by schools or the Y. Some of the biggest funders nationally are the Mormon Church and the Catholic Church, and this is where the pressure to keep the anti-gay stance comes from. However, many corporations have recently revoked their BSA funding at the national level until the anti-gay bi-laws are rewritten. That is what opened the BSA national council up for discussion on this topic again.
