Is this common knowledge? Because I have always thought it was, but I used it tonight and DH and MIL both looked at me like I had 4 dragon heads.

Yes, I learned it in a high school civics class when we were talking about fallacies. I think we learned a lot but all I can remember of the top of my head are red herring and slippery slope.
