my kid got her first pair of shoes at about 10 months, which was in october. she wasn't quite yet walking, but it was getting cooler out and she was crawling and pulling up so i wanted more foot protection. she only wore them outside. inside, it was barefoot or socks with grippy soles.
ETA: she had like ONE pair until she was walking all the time. and she had to have them for daycare once she was walking. and then she had like two pair. we mainly got pedipeds for a loooong time. the one with the barely there soles.
I wouldn't put shoes on him until he's actually walking outside.
LOL-I just remembered the first time we put shoes on Ellie-she was all "WTF are THESE?" It took her a few to figure out she could walk in them-so maybe try some shoes out for practice before heading outside.
We started wearing shoes at about one when he was walking in public places. I don't trust some random place to not have something on the floor that could cut his foot open if he stepped on it.
I'm w Lila on no shoes until walking. Easier for me to say b/c it's winter and they are at the pull-up/cruise phase. Had it been summer/spring I may do what Cville did. When we go out we double up on socks and make sure they have the grippies when we go to like, the museum play area or something.
Pedipeds? I have no idea wtf shoes to get them the first time. I'd like something w somewhat of a sole, I guess.
Mine also didn't wear shoes until he was walking well. That was about 13 months or so. And it took awhile for him to get used to them, so I agree with letting them practice inside for a bit first.
Besides not seeing the point, the few times I tried to put shoes on him as a baby, I couldn't get them on very well. He would flex his foot and I felt like I was jamming his feet in there. He hated even having socks on, so I think he did it on purpose.
I just bought the girls shoes last week. I got Olivia a pair at Walmart because she had been walking really well and I'm hoping to have her start walking outside soon since it's a juggling act trying to load one into the car seat while holding the other. It was a pair of Garanimals sneakers and she can't walk in them at all. H and I went to Payless on Sunday and got 4 pairs of shoes for $30 and they're awesome. The sneakers are not clunky and are fairly flexible, and we got them each a pair that have soft soles with a little rubber on the bottom for grip. Natalia started walking over the weekend and both have been able to walk in the shoes we got them.
It is better for their feet to learn to walk without shoes. That being said, I did put Robeez on them for the cuteness factor. And shoes are mandatory at our daycare, so they started wearing them around that age at daycare.
