DH has to go to San Antonio for work for 6 weeks (Aug-Sept) and will be there over Labor Day. I was thinking I could fly to Houston that Friday night and we could go down to Galveston to see SIL and her family on Saturday. We want Sunday and part of Monday to be "us" time.. What would you do? Any resorts or beaches you would recommend?

It's been a really, really long time since I have been to Galveston, and from what I've heard it has changed a lot (for the better). I thought it was pretty ok when I went. I liked Moody Gardens - we went there like the same week it opened, and I think it has a lot more to offer now. When I went it was just the rainforest pyramid.
Other than that, I don't know a whole lot about Galveston, but their website looks pretty extensive! www.galveston.com

I live halfway between Houston and Galveston, so I can help! The beaches in Galveston are pretty nasty right now because of the seaweed. It is supposed to get worse over the summer, so be prepared for that. There are a lot of really nice hotels to stay in. I have heard great things about the San Luis Resort. Moody Gardens is fun, but expensive. A new amusement pier thing just opened, the Pleasure Pier, that is rides and games and food.
If you have questions about specific places, feel free to pm me.
It's not really a resort kind of place. The San Luis is a really nice hotel, but still not a resort IMO.
As for Galveston... it's a fun place. It's wet. There's sand under all that seaweed...
It's not really a vacation destination. It's a place we go because it's close, not somewhere I'd travel to. Keep your expectations low and it'll be fun.
The best news is that the water looks a lot better in pictures than it does in real life. Lets just say it's not blue, ok?
I go down there pretty much every week in the summer. I just recommended the San Luis Resort to someone in another thread as well as the pier. The beaches aren't very good, but if you go to Surfside it's a little more clean.
Moody gardens is fun but expensive. Everyone goes to Stewart beach bc it's clean and they have bathrooms etc. The water is always silty bc that part of the gulf is still within the Mississippi delta sediment plume. It can't be avoided. Just don't take a white suit.
We went a couple of weeks ago and had a great time. The beach didn't have too much seaweed at the time. They opened the Pleasure Pier Memorial Day weekend (we missed it) and it looks like a lot of fun. The Strand is fun to walk around,

I like SIL and her family, so I'd like to see them. Oh, by beach I mean I just need something with sand, an ok view, and water to cool off from laying out/drinking. I'm not hard to please when it comes to beaches.
I don't mind staying in SA for those two days either, but it's cheaper to fly into Houston, so it'd be less driving to the airport.
I'm from Galveston and my family still lives there. The new Pleasure Pier just opened and my friends say it's worth the price. Schlitterbahn is also a great place to spend a day in the water. Moody Garden has some great attractions, including Palm Beach, a white sand beach with play areas for the little ones. Lots of great restaurant. The strand is fun. Be sure to stop in at La King's candy shop for some ice cream or homemade candy. Also, it's fun for the kids to ride the ferry. I used to love doing that as a kid. Just park your car and walk on and rise it both ways.
