I've been a lurker on this board for a while, but now that my H and I have bought our first house, I'll probably be posting more -- I've already learned a lot from lurking!
Anyway, we got a quote today for refacing our kitchen cabinets (cherry wood with solid wood doors in a smallish kitchen) and it was $14k, which was way more than I expected. Has anyone done this? Does this quote seem reasonable? Our cabinets are in pretty good shape, just really dated, so at that price I think I'd rather just paint them and get new hardware.
we got quotes for refacing our cabinets and it was anywhere from $12k to $20k. we have a decently sized galley kitchen, but it was WAY more than what we wanted to spend. like you, our cabinets are in decent shape (although not the highest of quality), but the clear urethaned maple wasn't our style. we are now in the process of painting our cabinets and I absolutely love it so far (and it's only costing us the price of paint, primer and materials).
My mom paid a crazy amount to have her cabinets refaced, and out neighbors had theirs done a couple of years ago and the cost was even higher. They could have gotten really nice cabinets for less than it cost them to reface their cabinets.

Yeah, the woman who gave us the quote said it would cost $50k+ to do a tear-out, even keeping the existing layout, which sounded like BS to me. Apparently the refacing would only take 3-5 days which would be awesome, but not awesome enough to justify that price.
Can you take your measurements to a local big box hardware store and get an estimate from them? I'm thinking for that money you could replace what you have -but the expense might be whatever you choose for counter tops but getting an estimate from a hardware store might be a good idea.
We looked into this and it was going to be ~10k for our small kitchen. It was not worth the price because it has a bad layout and one drawer we can not open without opening the oven door. It's a PITA! We plan to take that money and buy cabinets and redo the kitchen ourselves.

That sounds ridiculously high to me for non-custom cabinets.
If they are really solid cherry doors with cherry plywood boxes those are very expensive cabinets! (I know because that is what we are having made for our master bathroom vanities and storage cabinets except there are solid wood side panels to hide any plywood.) That would cost you a fortune to replace them with something a similar quality. What is you don't like about them just the stain color? Can you PIP?
Are you willing to refinish them yourselves? It would be a shame to paint over nice quality cabinets like that.
I replaced all my cabinets in my old house from Lowes for less than that. Refacing them would have cost more and we got fairly decent mid grade cabinets with a glaze and soft close drawers and all the goodies.
Our new house has nice cabinets so we are painting them. We were going to stain them but that's another story...

Don't worry, I would never paint over solid cherry cabinets! Our cabinets are 1970s builder-grade oak with hollow doors. The refacing would include replacing the doors and drawers and adding a cherry veneer to the boxes.
I'm surprised (but happy) to hear that it could even be less to just get new cabinets. The main things I dislike about ours are the orangey stain and the dated hardware, but I'm also not crazy about the kitchen layout, so right now I'm thinking I'll just do some cosmetic updates for now and save up to do a full remodel in a couple years.

I got a very rough estimate to have someone sand and stain/gel stain all of our cabinets, and it was around $3500. I think it sounds like you could have something like this done if the cabinets themselves are in good shape, for much less than refacing or new cabinets.
