Most of the time I run with a double stroller so I have tons of space to carry stuff (water, keys, fuel, kleenex, iphone) but when I'm running races this spring I won't have it there. I don't drink a lot of water (any actually) unless I'm running longer than 4 miles, and then I will take a sip or two every mile but I don't down a lot. Where do you keep all of your stuff? I have horrible horrible allergies during the spring and I have to have kleenex otherwise I would just be a snotty mess within a mile. Do you run with a fuel belt? Pockets?

I've actually never run a race (yet!), but I carry a fuel belt on all my runs. I don't need water unless I'm running over 4 miles or so, but I have asthma so I always need to have my inhaler with me. The only way I could carry that with me is in a fuel belt, so I throw my keys in there too. It's actually been nice to have water on shorter runs too!
What kind of races will you be running? For 5 and 10ks, I tie my car key into my shoelaces and leave everything else in the car. If I needed tissues, I would probably either stick them in the pocket that most of my capris/shorts have, or put them in a plastic bag and pin it somewhere. For a longer race where I will need fuel/water/my phone, I bring a fuel belt.

I have a lot of running clothes with small zippered pockets, so I can put small things like my ID and keys in those. If I need to carry something larger, I use my SPI belt. It's small and not bulky at all. I also have a handheld water bottle. If I need significantly more water or fuel, I park my car somewhere along the trail and leave things in there.

On long runs I have a fuel belt. Otherwise I tie my key to my shoe, hide it or put it in my little short pocket. I snot rocket when I have boogers. This is an essential runner skill I believe, before I could do it, I used my shirt.
At races I never carry my fuel belt. I wrap it in tinfoil so it squeezes into my pocket. The less the better.
For shorter races (say 10k and under) I tuck my car key into the little pocket in my shorts or capris or tie it to my drawstring, leave everything else in the car, and use the race's water stops for water. For half marathons, I tuck half a pack of shot bloks into the aforementioned pocket then my car keys, phone, change of clothes for after the race, etc go in my gear bag for the gear check that my running group does for members only (probably my favorite perk of the group, after the group aspect ;D). Since I got pg, I carry a handheld water bottle with a little pocket in the handle that's big enough for some shot bloks and my car key if I have no pockets or drawstrings.
I tie my key to my shoe. Everything else, metro card, a couple spare tissues (for porta potties that are out of tp), cash, snacks, goes into pockets. I don't usually run with my phone.
I have a spi belt, but I only use it for marathons when I need to carry more fuel.
I carry a water bottle if I'm running for more than an hour. If I have to stash a car key (when I'm racing), I put it in my pocket (all my running clothes have pockets of some sort).
And, no tissues...learn to do snot-rockets and you won't carry tissues again!
I use a handheld bottle for less than an hour (it has a zippered pocket), a fuel belt for longer, and a spi belt/no fuel belt for long races.
No tissues for me either. When I first started running, my sister made me practice snot rockets and spitting for like 20 minutes. That was actually a really valuable training session .
Pockets. I tie my key on my shoe, and unlace my shoes to do it. My shoe might come untied, but it won't come unlaced. The less on me, the better. I quit wearing my ipod arm band because I just can't deal with extra.
In the summer I run in turbo run shorts from Lululemon. They have a pocket with a zipper and a little pocket for other stuff. The nice thing about running in the winter is all of my jackets have an insane amount of pockets.
I usually wear my fuel belt for anything longer than 6 and it also has a pocket.

I only run with water on my long runs when I'm fueling. I just bought a 12oz sports water bottle this weekend that has a little zip pouch. I put my fuel in there for my long run today and it worked well. I have an armband for my iPod (I have used that for fuel when I didn't have anything else and wasn't using my iPod). Almost all of my pants have a small pocket - I put my car key in there when I'm running around the city after work. On the weekends, I don't take my key on my long run. I never run with my phone. Sometimes I'll take it if I'm wearing a jacket with a pocket, but I'm not terribly attached.
I have been known to stuff kleenex in my bra during allergy season (up toward the shoulder strap, so it doesn't get too soggy). Never thought I'd be stuffing my bra after all these years
I would like a fuel/spibelt at some point, but I'm making due with what I've got for now. I did see some cheaper knock off ones at walmart and target while looking for my water bottle, though.

Key to your shoe! I never in a million years would have thought of that! Going to try that. I don't think I'm going to need much for the 10k I've got coming up in March but I'm running a half in April so I'm guessing I'm going to need some sort of fuel for that one. Thanks for all of the ideas everyone!

Okay. I can hawk up a spitball with the best of them now (seriously, it's gotten downright impressive) but where exactly does one learn how to snot rocket? LOL. The things you learn as you start running more!

It's pretty easy. Hold your finger or thumb to one nostril and blow out hard with the other. Just make sure there isn't anyone around you and be sure to aim away from yourself.
DH always tells me how proud he is that his wife does snot rockets. He tells other people too. *-)
I think most people carry way too much stuff. I just ran an 18 miler with my running group and no one carried anything but handheld water bottles, some gels/shot blocks in the pockets of their bottles, and a single car key in the zipper pocket of pants. We planned a route that doubled back to certain points, so we'd dropped our bottles at those points and come back to them, then run a ways and drop them again. I wear gloves and when my hands get too hot, I tuck the wrists of the gloves into my tights on either side of my hips and they stay there without bothering me. I've carried my asthma inhaler in the pocket of my water bottle before.
If you're running less than an hour in under 65 degree temps, I don't think you even need water unless you're pregnant or have special medical needs. And why on earth does everyone need to run with their iPhone and a whole key chain? Just go run. You'd be surprised how little you need.

I run with my iphone to listen to music sometimes, but I also do it because for most of my longer runs, I run by myself or with my baby. During the winter it would get dark pretty early and there were a couple of times I was running at dusk due to childcare. I am hyper sensitive because one of my friends got followed and chased late last year and as the mom of three kids, there's no way I would put myself in that kind of position where the kids could ever be without their mom. Yeah, I know the chances of that happening are one in a billion, but I'd rather carry my phone in an armband than not. With my keys, it honestly never occurred to me to take the damn key off of the hook (yeah, I know I'm clueless. LOL)- but now that I know that I'm going to start putting it on my shoelace like you ladies suggested.
Now that I know about snot rockets (am totally going to practice on my next run) that will cut down on one less thing I carry. I'm naturally a pack rat, and with the double stroller it was so easy to just load up so that's what I got used too. I'm pretty sure that when I run my half I will just bring a hand held water bottle (or else not even that and just drink along the course), some honey stingers (again, stupid blood sugar) and my phone (for music in that case). Thanks for the tip trigirl about snot rockets! LOL. DH will be so proud.

My pleasure!!
And, during the race, just use the aid stations for water. That's what they are there for!
