I'm starting to pull together some ideas for our nursery and came up with this combination. H is worried that it's too "boy" because of the wall color, but I know we can add pink and purple elements if baby is a she (we are team green). Any suggestions or comments? Anything you would change? I originally thought I wanted to go heavy on the hot air balloon theme but now I'm thinking I should leave it a little looser and do travel/sky themed.
I like it! I'd also leave the color. If it's a girl you'll just naturally be inundated with a ton of pink stuff to incorporate. Same withe boy blue color.
I really like that nursery theme. A bit different, but still kid friendly.
I don't have kids, but the last gender neutral nurseries that my friends have done were:
Animal themed: Zoo prints with a hand me down leopard chair, zebra lamp, dark furniture and lots of stuffed animals Carnival themed: Pastel striped walls with pennant flag curtains, maple furniture, carnival prints and stuffed animals. Puppy themed. Icy blue walls, green carpet, white furniture, gingham pillows and and puppy wall border at chair rail height. Polka dot themed. Pale turquoise walls with green, white and yellow polka dots, white curtains with polka dots and dark furniture with more polka dots on pillows and changing pad. Because the dots were spread out and the colors were muted, we weren't seeing spots.
We did a grey-green wall color (a Martha Stewart color from HD) and I LOVE it. We paired with orange. We ended up with a girl. I found a fabric I liked first and picked colors from that. My mom sewed curtains from the fabric. I would start with some art or a rug (unless that is carpet at the bottom there?) or curtains, and pick the greenish wall color from that. I like the hot air balloon and I like the whole vintage travel theme. I feel like I saw one recently. Actually I think it was on here. Someone was trying to decide which nursery to do and had posted like 3 options. Anyone remember that?
I don't think the color seems 'too boy' at all, but like Tarheels said, I think that particular shade does seem a bit neon (for lack of a better word). ETA: SW aloe would be a nice version of that color.
I think the theme is a really fun theme for a nursery. I have seen it used before and thought it was clever...there is so much that can be done with it.
I don't understand needing to add pink to a room to 'girl it up'. I guess we just think that a girl can like any color. Or any theme. My daughter wanted a pirate themed nursery, and considered a space theme, whether her baby was a boy or a girl. The room that became the baby's room had been her studio, which she had planned to decorate with pirate stuff before she got pregnant and had to give it up. She is the one in her family who is an expert on the subject of pirates...space and the space program too. Her DH knew nothing little or nothing about either subject.
The color is reading somewhat medium seafoam green on my monitor. I wore this color as a bridesmaid once- we carried daisies sprayed that color as well. It was ghastly in that application. Here, it looks sort of fresh but not especially soft. Had DS been a girl, his nursery would be that color with a nursery toile fabric I fell in love with.
It feels very traditional nursery to me- in other words- a more temporary space designed to appeal to the mother baby pair until baby develops his/her own opinions and moves on to a real bedroom to make room for the next sibling. My friends who were planning multiple children tended to have more baby-like nurseries than those who were one and done or planning to move a new baby into a different room.
If anything, the white dresser makes it feel babier/girlier rather than masculine.
I don't think the room screams boy. You can definitely add in some girly touches if needed but I actually prefer gender neutral. We have a bright blue bedroom that will be turned into the nursery later. I don't plan on changing the color if we have a girl.
TBM I think the color actually is SW Aloe! I'm not sure why it looks weird for some people.
Thanks everyone!
For some reason the SW swatches and even the color visualizer often show the colors in a more neon way than the colors actually look on walls. My henna shade painted house exterior looks more like a reddish terra cotta irl, but on the visualizer it looked a bit day-glo.
Your background is looking a bit more like 80s seafoam than the prettier aloe.
That looks totally gender neutral to me. And also adorable! I'm not going to comment on the color because my monitor is awful. Just make sure you sample it before committing.
If you want to "girl it up" or "boy it up" I can say from experience that if you find out the sex, and tell people what it is, the next thing you know you'll be gifted with a ridiculous amount of girly or boyish stuff and it'll tip the room one way or the other. To the point where for me I've started having rather unpleasant dreams where it turns out this watermelon is a boy watermelon and I have to decide if I'm going to buy a bunch of new shit or just dress my boy baby in pink and purple for his first year of life... (I lean toward the latter to be honest.)
i like it a lot and don't think it is overly boyish at all. like pp's mentioned, just adding the blues or pinks when the LO is born will turn the tide whichever direction it needs to go.
