Apparently the container store sells so,e sort of liner made specifically for this purpose.
My new pantry has them, and my plan is to put cardboard from moving boxes on the shelves. I am classy like that.
Yes the container store, Rev-a-shelf, Rubbermaid, and lots of other wire shelf manufacturers make clear plastic pieces that sit on top of the shelf to make it smooth. I've been looking at closet systems a lot and they all make these liners for the wire pull out baskets so your clothes don't have a wire imprint on them when you take them out.
yup, cardboard for a less attractive but super cheap option. Actual shelf liners for a bit more money, but slightly better looking. All the usual suspects sell something meant for this purpose.
Most of those shelves are a standard depth (12" for the ones we had) and there is a matching depth with the tiles. Laminate tiles really aren't hard to cut either.
