My Mirena is out! I am now cleared to start TTC (as soon as I get my first period since I haven't had a period since November 2011 while on the Mirena). I have a question - the doctor recommended my husband and I get tested to see if we are carriers for cystic fibrosis. She said it's a common test. Has anyone else had this done?
Our doctor usually waits until the woman is pregnant to do the testing, then they just test the mother. Both parents have to be carriers in order to pass it onto the baby, so if the mother is negative then there's no routine reason to check the father.
However, as it could change how you approach the idea of parenthood, it may be worthwhile to be testing before TTC. It could change what test you order, etc, when you do get pregnant:-)
My OBGYN recommended CF testing. I was tested, and I would recommend it from personal experience of a friend with CF. Will your insurance cover it? I did not check my insurance first, but they paid the entire $3,500 bill for the blood work up. They also tested for MMR immunity and all of the vital good stuff that should be in your blood (sorry, so not in the medical field...) FWIW, I should be tested to see if I am a Tay-Sachs carrier, but that was not tested at the time and I have not requested it yet.
