After my long runs I typically take an ibupofen for muscle soreness. Does anyone take any pain relievers per-run? Does it help? It makes me a bit nervous but seems logical.
Not a good idea. If you need a pain reliever to get through your run, you're either running too hard, too long, or you're injured. Pain is your body's way of telling you something isn't right--so, like after a hard workout, you know what to fix. If you mask the *potential* pain by taking ibuprofen before you run, you could be aggravating something that needs to be addressed. And it's not good for your kidneys.

I never take NSAIDs before my run for this reason. I have to know during my run if I have an injury popping up so I can stop running and keep from getting further injured.
Plus, it can really tear up your stomach. There was a thread the other day where someone realized the random ibuprofen she took before a race was the source of her stomach problems.

I took advil before both of my half marathons and had terrible stomach issues afterward. It wasn't unitl researching that i discovered the Advil was probably the source. I wouldn't do it. especially now that i have read the article above.

I just read in runners world yesterday that taking ibuprofen before/after/within 12 hrs of a run can result in kidney failure. -- It wasn't an article, it was one of the little blurbs in the front of the mag from people who write in - It was from a Dr who was correcting something that had been published in an earlier issue.. I have heard/read in other places that taking pain relievers during/after run is dangerous.
Stretching, and icing and heat are my remedies for sore muscles immediately after a run. If i'm still have soreness the next day then I might take something - if it's really bad.. but usually i just handle it.
