at my 10k yesterday, i was 13th in my AG - but they were10 year age groups. i was just looking at the results, and if they were 5 year, i would have been 3rd and i would have gotten a trophy and they were pretty trophies now im whiney.
I fall into to 30 - 39 age group and it's a tough one; it's usually faster than the 20 - 29 AG. The woman who won the 5K that I ran yesterday was in her 40's. It's exciting that running is a sport where youth is not an automatic advantage, but it makes for some tough competition!

I think I've read/heard that the 35-39 group is the most competitive for females.

most of my running/cycling partners who are of equal or stronger ability are in their 40s. One of my friends won our last olympic triathlon - she is 53 years old.
40-44 is the toughest age group with 35-39 being next. Not only are these women at their physical peak, they have years and years have experience. Also, their kids are older (in school) so many of them have more time to train.
I have never done a race with 10-yr age groups but I have done tons of races with no age group awards. Look at it as a goal - keep at it and you can place!
