Should I get tempered class for the kitchen cabinets? Each glass panel would be ~12"x13" and a thickness of ~3/16"-1/4". It's rain glass.
Supplier said non-tempered is fine since location is high and at a location that has no obstruction or potential to be hit. Cab maker recommends tempered. If the glass ever breaks, you wouldn't want it to fall on you. But then he said he never heard any of his customers (with his 30yrs in the business) breaking a glass.
I'd do tempered to be safe. Especially with kids, if there was a cabinet to break and a child was under it, I'd much rather it be tempered glass that broke. I know that's unlikely, but I'd rather be safe just in case.
I wouldn't because tempered is usually a huge price difference but if money is not a factor then go for it. I've had glass front cabinets& kids for almost 9yrs & the thought has never really crossed my mind. My kids are much more likely to break a 110yr old window (which they have).
So my coffee table is non-tempered glass. I've caught my 16 lb cat walking on it (!) and I rest my feet on it (near a support) without any ill effects. Our last house had glass cabinets and I can't imagine how they'd break unless you slingshotted a marble through one. My vote's for nontempered.
