You can barely tell it's painted a different color. Someone here painted their island a pretty aqua, and I really liked it so I'd say aqua. The room needs some color!

She actually said in a previous post that the color didn't turn out the way she hoped, plus the paint chipped, so she is going to paint it white like the cabinets. I think a fun color would be great, but white is classic and I don't mind it. She says she is going to add in color with accessories.
It works with the kitchen. Still looks fresh and clean, despite the lack of contrast. I understand why they went with the safer color. It takes a huge leap of faith to paint something bolder like aqua.
Signed, someone still biting her nails about the aqua island that is being installed this week
You're right, I wasn't clear. I know they are going to redo it, but I think it would be a fun place to add a yellow, or like wop suggested, aqua. But I am kind of obsessed with aqua right now, so that could color my opinion.
I think I actually prefer the white since she said they're going to do shallow shelves on the end, so I'm not sure how well the color would be "seen" since it seems the angle of the photo is the main traffic flow.
Then again I am a white kitchen lover, so I'm bias.
Aqua can go so wrong and if you choose the wrong stage, you're basically stuck looking at this giant blue island that's smack in the center of the kitchen. It took a LONG time for me to not go with the safer gray and than even longer to choose the right shade of aqua for my kitchen. And even now, it's not here and I'm always second guessing my choice.
I have a huge aqua ottoman in my LR and when it was first delivered, the reaction from H was "it's very big and very blue" LOL That's pretty much the reaction I get from most people. Turns out I like "very big and very blue"

I like the *idea* of color there. That is a VERY monotone kitchen at the moment. However, I think if I were painting it, I'd probably do something safe, too. Ahem. Painting cabinets is a PITA.

Oooh! Exciting! You will have to post pictures!
I definitely will. I'm a nervous wreck. It's the same kind of feeling when you pick out a wall color and you're terrified that when you roll the first coat it won't look anything like you thought it would.

But the color you picked for you kitchen is so NOT safe. That color is amazing. How is your kitchen coming along?
This isn't about the island, which I think is fine, if not a bit boring, but the tiles. it's probably the photo, but it looks like sponge paint here. I don't like it.
I think I'll probably like it better white. The current shade of gray is different, but not different enough... I don't know. Like it tried to be different but kind of half-assed the effort.
All in all I am not a fan of this kitchen redo. It's very cold, sterile, and lifeless to me. I'm sure it had its issues (especially IRL and living with it) before the redo, but it felt more warm/welcoming to me before they made it all gray & white.

Awww, thanks. No, definitely not safe. Still love the color. I'm still putting on doors - we decided to haul them upstairs on Tuesday night instead of hanging them to let them cure the full week because I'm really anal about that stuff. At the moment, the cabinets are almost fully loaded and the counter is a GIANT mess - it's going to take me weeks to fully get a grip on the amount of crap we own. Our handles and knobs should be here sometime this week, so that'll be nice.
Also, we discovered a couple drawers need a complete rebuild, so that's something that R will just have to take care of down the road a bit, but in the meantime, those drawers are completely empty.
I would have loved a pop of yellow for the island. My eye is immediately drawn to the only color in the room, the cookbooks above the fridge, and it looks messy b/c it is not cohesive color. It stands out b/c there is no other color in the kitchen to draw you eye anywhere. I would have also painted the electric outlet the same gray as the island.

I think it would look less "sterile" (to use a PP words) if the gray on the walls had been darker. Like charcoal gray would have been nice and bold. I think it's looking okay but it does need color. (I really love those tiles though.)
geez, if it weren't for the bookshelf it almost looks like a black and white photo. There's nothing terrible about it, but it seems a little blah for something that they just put so much effort into redoing.
I like it overall, but I think I would have chosesn a different color for the walls, not just the island. A warmer mushroom grey would have been my choice. With the cool grey walls, the backsplash, the island and the SS appliances, it all kind of blends together. I like it though, because overall I tend to prefer a neutral kitchen and then bring in color with accessories.

I don't know anything about what it used to look like (please don't tell me they painted nice wood cabinets!) but I like it. The boring grey/white does not bother me. I think the color of the island is too light, but a darker gray, or a bright color would look good. Or plain white.
They can add some color with a window treatment, etc, and it will look less boring, but in general boring kitchens do not bother me,

sorry I couldn't help it. (devil) Here's a before:

They kind of did
Before:
I might not have chosen those specific cabinets if I were building, but I might not paint them if they came with the house.
This just felt more warm/welcoming to me. Hopefully when they accessorize the white kitchen it'll warm up a little.
the picture you posted really shows how well the whole room worked together. I wouldn't pick those cabinets myself either probably, but it really was a warm kitchen. I love the greenish wall color they had.
I like my DIY projects, but I also like knowing that I'm spending my weekends doing this stuff because my house NEEDS it. If my house looked like that before, I'd be kicking back with a margarita.
