BF and I are going on a tall ship sailing tour next weekend (which I'm insanely excited about). I've never been on a boat before, large or small, so I have no clue what to wear. It's going to be hot and windy, that I know for sure. Is wearing a dress just asking for trouble? I'm not a shorts/capris kind of woman.
I would say that wearing a dress would be asking for trouble. Even if its going to be hot, if its windy its going to be a little chilly on the water. I personally would go with capris and a cami/cardigan combo but since you don't do them, I'd say slacks of some kind?
For that I would wear a pair of loose fit shorts, a tank and a 3/4 sleeve shirt of some sort, and bring a lightweight jacket. I would probably stick with footwear that strapped on somehow, or light sneakers.
Do you wear scarfs? I wore one on our boat cruise recently that was light weight (I had on a tank top and capris) that I wrapped around my shoulders and arms and it was perfect. Don't forget the sunscreen.
In terms of getting chilly, a dress would be no different than a pair of shorts. If you feel more comfortable in a dress, go for it but you're gonna wanna find some bike shorts to go underneath unless you wear one that's less prone to fly on a breeze and show the world your goodies.
I would do capris, tank, cardigan and some shoes that won't slip off and have bottoms that don't slip. Suncreen and sunglasses too. If you wear a dress you will spend the whole time holding it down.

So basically, I need to get myself some capris and flats. I'll make sure no pictures are taken of me that day.
Why? I'm sure you'll look fine. I'm not a capri and flats kind of girl either, but I wouldn't shy away from a camera because I'm wearing them. I do that regardless!
I would never wear a dress or skirt on a boat because you will most likely be holding it down the entire time. Its just not practical. Same with sandals unless they have some kind of non-skid sole.
Or maybe I've just been on different kinds of boats because the decks are always wet and its always been at least a little windy/chilly on the water.

Because then I look like I'm one giant lollipop away from joining a guild.

No dresses or skirts! You don't want to spend the whole time holding them down or flashing everyone.
I wouldn't advise any slip on shoes unless you would feel okay if one potentially went into the water, never to return. And definitely dress in layers. If you have any quick dry stuff, I would wear that.
Well, I thought you were going on a sailboat or something! I wouldn't hesitate to wear a dress and sandals on one of those things. Although, I'd do a maxi dress like others suggested since it won't blow around as much.
I'm used to speed type boats and sailboats and that's what I thought you were doing.
