For a smash cake I would probably do just a vanilla/white/yellow cake & frosting. Maybe a berry cake or frosting, but nothing outrageous, no chocolate, butterscotch, caramel or anything like that.

That's what I'm thinking too. I don't want him to be on sugar overload. I'm planning white cake but not sure which frosting.
Probably doing chocolate cake with white buttercream.
I'm going sound like such a cake baking newb but is butter frosting the same as buttetcream? It's all I see in my cookbook.
As far as I know, yes.
I want a frosting that won't stain his skin or clothes, but I want a messy smash cake experience. I feel like the chocolate/vanilla frosting will give me the best bang for my buck.

It says butter, powdered sugar, milk and vanilla.
Me too. I'm planning a small 4 layer white cake and since his party is nautical, it'll be red and white alternating.
I'm doing a full out cake with italian meringue buttercream. Probably chocolate with a lot of blue dye in the icing. It's one cake, one day, so I'm not going to fret about sugar, chocolate and dyes.
I want to make a sponge cake, with whipped cream like icing mixed with berries for both the big cake and the smash cake. I bought a cake mold that looks like a huge cupcake for the smash cake.

I made the big cupcake. It was very cute in pics, but was hard to bake. You may want to google instructions bc my cake was practically burnt on the outside to make it cooked completely on the inside.

I'm making a hungry caterpillar cake... Luke's will be the face then the body will be cupcakes. Luke's has to be egg free so I'm making it. I'll probably do white cake with cool whip type icing so it's messy
I am doing a smash cake at our photo session the weekend before, I might decorate that one with a caterpillar but just use cool whip too

I haven't decided yet, but I know I don't want her to be full of sugar and dye, so I'm sure hers will be something unsweetened with whipping cream. I'm thinking applesauce cake with blueberries.

Smash cake will be applesauce cake with cream cheese frosting. The rest will be cupcakes put together to look like the cat's hat. (Applesauce cupcakes with cream cheese frosting for the white stripes, and chocolate cupcakes with buttercream frosting for the red stripes.)
I think in going to make a carrot cake. I just need to make sure that the cream cheese icing I make out of dairy free cream cheese tastes okay.
I love carrot cake! I've had one for every birthday for as long as I can remember. You're kind of making me want to do carrot cake. At least then I could pretend it was good for her, lol.
ohhh I like the healthy idea!!! I love carrot cake too but I've never made it so it might be interesting. I just know my nephew had an Elmo smash cake and he was stained red for all his pics and I don't want that so white icing only!
