Does anyone do both marathons and duathlons/triathlons? I definitely have a marathon on the calendar for Nov 25th and I was tentatively planning on doing one in late October. Now that I have a road bike I'm going to start with duathlons and then eventually do triathlons. My ultimate goal (for now) is a half ironman someday. Does this plan sound feasible? (please keep in mind that I've already done 2 marathons and in addition to running I CF 3x/week, so not exactly new to high volume training)
Short duathlon 1mi run/12.4mi bike/ 3.1mi run Aug 4th Similar distance on Sept 29th Maybe marathon on Oct 21st 2mi run/20mi bike/5mi run on Oct 28th (if not doing the duathlon I plan to run a half marathon this same date, IF I feel I can. Either would be last minute registration if I did the marathon.) Definitely marathon on Nov 25th Participate in next spring tri season Half Ironman Sept 2013 Marathon Dec 2013
I understand there is a risk for injury here which is why this is a 'if my body obeys me'. I feel like I should drop the October marathon, though that makes me sad. I guess what I'm really getting at is will those duathlons impact my marathon training? Do I really have to choose between the sports? Or are those distances just tiny blips on the radar and I should just go with what my body allows?
you can do all of them - it's just about which one you want do your best in.
the thing with training for different kind of races is that you have to decide which direction you want to push. If you push in too many directions, well, you are not going to really get anywhere. if you focus on the marathon and decide to cycle as cross training and do duathlons, that will work - but, you're not going to reach your true potential for that duathlon.
people tend to underestimate biking, imo. so many runners call it "easy". if its easy, its because you are going slow. so, if you want to get good at cycling, then the marathon is not the right race at the moment. you just have to decide what you want kick ass in!

Very good point gumi. I have no expectations for the bike portion at this point because I haven't riden a bike in a very very long time. I think what will likely happen is that I will drop the october marathon and focus on the november marathon. The duathlons will be something I do just to see where I'm at and get my feet wet (so to speak). Then after November focus on the tris and work hard for the 2013 half ironman with the December 2013 marathon being for fun.
I haven't (and don't necessarily plan) to do a full marathon, but plenty of people in my tri club do them. One of my friends got into NYCM this year, so she's doing tri's all summer and then the full then.
Half Iron-Man. Go Jenny! Where are those open water swim races?
you should have seen us "open water swimming" on Saturday in CLW... we saw people standing on a sand bar so we swam through that shark infested water out to the sand bar.. it was hilarious.

That's a start....
Did you have a drink in your hand? And it's always helpful to have buddies when OWS so the shark will eat them not you.

I've found my running has gotten significantly better since I started cross training with the intent to do triathlons this summer. I'm not primarily focused on triathlons, like Bree mentioned, my primary focus is still this half marathon in a few weeks, but I do swim and cycle with specific goals in mind. There are no easy days for me anymore, lol, but I think it's made me a better athlete overall. It certainly has kept me from getting injured as well.
