We got a snow day too! It is just starting here-40 MPH winds, blowing snow, ice, and it's supposed to be the worst during the morning commute and not stop snowing until tomorrow morning. I'm so glad they were preventative and called it off.
Preemptive snow day? I'm so jealous. How does that work?
The same as a real one. Superintendent decides we don't need to have school, sends out the alert, we stay home. They tack it on at the end of the year.
I'm just bitter because the day we'll be working now (instead of this one) is my birthday. I was hoping to be off!
Well, what I meant was: How/why do they decide on a snow day if there's no snow on the ground?

Oh, haha.. sorry for being too literal!
It's based on the forecast, I guess. I think they use the radar a lot. Essentially, it's supposed to get crazy bad before we'd even be able to get a 1/2 day of school in (the minimum amount of time we have to spend at school for it to count for state funding), so it was either.. go in and risk the possibility of it being dismissed so early that we would have to repeat the day anyway OR go in and refuse to dismiss so early that we would have to repeat the day (and therefore endanger kids) OR cancel school and just make up the day later.
Yikes! See, around here the biggest concern is the roads in the morning. If the school buses can get through their morning routes, it can be assumed that it won't get cold enough for the afternoon to be a problem. Then again, we're so un-used to snow that when we get two inches everyone loses their shit and the town practically shuts down. Haha.
