A collection agency keeps calling me looking for my XH - apparently he didn't pay about $3,000 on an American Express card. They have called my cell phone and work phone numerous times despite me telling them not to contact me. I've reported them to the Do Not Call List for my cell, but I can't keep getting these calls at work. I recognize the number now so I don't answer, but this is ridiculous!
The agency keeps asking me if I know where to find him, if I wanted to help pay this bill, etc. (yeah, ok, LOL) I do know where to find him, but I didn't give them any information, if figured if they could find me, they could find him.
What's really weird is that my XH was a lot of things but he wasn't someone who didn't pay his bills. They said I wasn't liable for anything here, so I'm not too concerned, but it is all very weird.
Well, I did report them to the government do not call list so hopefully that does the trick. They think we are married still so maybe that's why they are talking to me about the debt? I don't think they belive me when I say I don't know where he is and we aren't married anymore.
Tell them you know your rights under the credit protection act and they need to stop contacting you for debt that isn't theirs or you'll file a complaint. Or just give them his number. That's what I would probably do.
I work for collections. Do not call list won't work because it isn't a soliciation call. But if they call your job, tell them that this is your place of employement and they can not contact you there. Legally they need to not call that number anymore. As for your cell, you can also tell them it is your cell and you do not approve them calling you from an auto dialer (more then likely that is what they are using to call you). If they still call report them to the BBB. That will get them to stop real quick! Hope that helps
be short, firm, and to the point. they do not have your permission to contact you at those numbers, you are not responsible for that debt, you are not married to your XH nor were you when he accrued that debt, and you will report them to the BBB and state and federal regulatory agencies if they do not cease contacting you at any number, immediately.
