Yup we were taught that too. Actually that last one makes me feel empowered. Instead of sitting there like a dead duck you can do something about it.
I did the actual training. The officer came in acting like a active shooter and we were to do what we thought was best. Of course all of us hid. Then he walked around the room hitting us with foam balls and it only took a matter of seconds. It was terrifying to be shown how defenseless you really are when you just hide. So instead fight back.
My mom went through the same training, her response when the "attacker" came in was to standup and yell "HOLY SHIT THERE's TWO OF THEM" and the officer actually glanced over his shoulder for a second. The woman can't send a text message but she can out smart a training officer.
I wish they would do a training at my university. Sometimes I just sit in my office and picture myself jumping to lock my (full panel no window) door and hiding under my desk. But then for how long? When do you get out? I hope I never have to find out.
when ever I imagine situations like this, I always see myself rushing the attacker. I can't say what I would REALLY do, but I feel like my instinct would not be to hide.

hmm, an actual training sounds like it would be really beneficial. I am a long ways from an exit, so hiding would be my first instinct, but it sounds like its not the one that gives you the highest survival chance.
I look at it this way. There is a possibility that doing something may get you killed, but there is a REALLY good possibility that doing nothing will get everyone killed. If I'm going to die, I'd rather have it be because I was trying to help others.
For a long time I'd always plot an escape route if anything were to happen. Now I'm often on a high floor with no windows and no locking door. I've just stopped thinking about it. But these are really good tips that I wouldn't have thought of if anything were to happen.
